Brakes Overhaul

With my MOT coming around quicker than I'd like, coupled with the fact that Nathan didn't bother sorting them last year, I need to sort out my back brakes.

I want to do a basic overhaul.

I obviously need to get some new brake shoes, and I figured some new wheel cylinders, but is there anything else I should buy before attacking them.

Secondly, when I had rear brake failure earlier in the year (fluid leak), I couldn't get either of the drums off.  
Any volunteers to help me sort them out this time?

If your coming over to the barn i have all my tools to hand otherwise i would need to drag as many as i can think of with me

I'd recommend a complete spring and hardware kit.

Check ebay etc . . .

They're not a lot.  And often something breaks or gets lost . . . .

I've just spent three hours on the rear nearside drum on the GMC
Got all of the six springs and new shoes back on but can't get the drum back on.
Messed about for an hour in the dark , the handbrake adjuster  is backed right off and I've even taken the other drum off to check that it looks the same.
Kicked it into touch until the morning when apart from rain and snow I might be able to see what I'm doing ?
If I can get it back together and working I'll be happy to give you a hand.

hmmm.. mental note... palm rear brakes off on nathan..

i have always hated working on two things on cars... clutches and drum brakes.

discs no problem, can do them blindfold, but drums? eeeeeuch!

Last year when the 1st MOTer failed it on the rear brakes I asked for a quote, he said without looking, it could be anything and wouldn't give a price.

I went to Nathan, and he gave me a quote to replace the shocks/rear springs and sort the brakes.

He didn't touch the brakes.

Personally, I would now rather tackle it myself(with assisstance) so I at least know what is being done.  *If* we fail, then I would consider taking it to someone to pay for it to be done.

Shouldn't be major problem even i've had a go at drums before.  Requires a big hammer and lots of cursing, if I remember correctly

Nothing on any of our cars is dificult, just come over to the barn as i have all my tools there and its dry and with a little gas warm as well

Jeeze the rain I could cope with but not the snow  
Just put all my clothes in the dryer , still can't get the SOB to fit !
Pretty sure it's to do with the handbrake adjustment ?
I've slackened off the cable back to it's stop , but still the drum won't go on.
The shoes look an exact match but I'm going to measure them to make sure.
Will wait for the snow to stop.

When taking off the drum or putting it back on get the blow torch out and heat the fu*ker -

If getting off slacken handbreak, adjust shoes back then heat the drum until uber hott and then smack with a big hammer.

If putting back on again heat real hott, put some gloves on and quickly squeeze it back over the shoes.

Worked for me everytime.  You proberly know this already but just something for you to try otherwise

The SOB is back to together again
The problem appears to be pressure in the caliper ?
Not enough to push the shoes right out so you can see it , but enough to push them out so that the drum won't go on.
Off side rear I did in ten minutes , no problem at all , but spent all day on the near side rear.
Me thinks it's time for a new near side caliper because it is weeping , well may as well do both.
