More Brakes
« on: January 09, 2006, 10:05:49 pm »
Having picked myself off the floor - £200 to properly sort the rear brakes, I have re-considered the option - Disc brake upgrade.

This is on the to-do list, but as rear brakes aren't as effective as the fronts, I figured that it could be well down the list - at least 4-5 years down the line. For the same reason, I am not convinced that I need to spend gross amounts of money on the Baer Kit.

I have found 2 kits (Wilwood and un-named) at almost half the cost - approx $600 + shipping. (not sure if the Wilwood will fit 15in wheels yet, waiting for a reply)

In your opinions, am I better off spending the £200 on drums and getting a few years use out of them before upgrading (regardless of make), or would the money be best spent towards doing the upgrade, but on the cheaper versions?

Drums are still drums, I'd rather have discs any day.

Plans?? Mainly street, occasional (very) strip run.  Goes as good as it looks.

On the plans list(in rough order)

17in Wheels (to accomodate big brakes)
Baer Brakes (front)
200-4r Overdrive Gearbox
A rebuilt 400 SBC - 64cc Vortec heads, Pro-Flo fuel injection - aiming for 350-400 BHP.

How bad are the rear brakes ?

I Can get you an M.o.T if it's just a case of putting it off for a bit . . . .

That's the un-named kit I have found before - I feel a bit better about it now I know the company.

I can get it cheaper too.

They failed the MOT last year (I think N just let it through on the retest).  I also had a complete failure on them, as it ran out of fluid.  Didn't find out where the leak was as I couldn't get the drum off. Have been checking/topping up the fluid ever since (check is overdure - better do it soon)

Although I know I can get it through the MOT, it's a job I'd rather get done and out of the way to give me peace of mind.

I need to have a closer look then.  The catalogue I was looking in had some nice kit, but didn't have matching front/rear for my year.

I need to have another look, and not necessarily go for matching sets.

Yep, thought so, they only do 1 set for the fronts and they fit the standard 15in wheel. Not much of a performance upgrade.

Well the Wilwoods are out of the window - you have to change the wheel studs to 1/2s.  I don't want to end up with different lugs front/rear.

Guess that leaves me with the SSBC ones.

I did call USAutos to see what they could offer, will see what they come up with.

I quite like the look of the stock-fit stuff they do for the 3rd gen. It wouldn't be much of a performance upgrade (?) as you say but would still be nice to have installed.  Only thing is getting pads & stuff could be a pain.

would mean I could keep my stock alloys too which I do really like TBH

Yeah sorry I ment the front brake upgrades.  with a stock fit upgrade the rear drums would probably stay.
