go .30 over

Assuming they haven't been bored before . . . . . . If your ordering a kit before checking you don't want it to arrive then find out you're already +30 thou.

Maybe go straight to +60 thou ?

Ok, so if the blocks got to come out for machining, it's it worth doing for just the bottom end.  The overall plan is new everything, but the main items being

Heads & cam
Intake

My original plan was to do the whole lot and take my time over it (with a spare engine in the car thoughout the build).  Is a 3+ staggered approach (i.e. Bottom end, Top end, intake) viable/better bet?

No, I only want to go up 1 from what it needs. Don't want to lose a future overbore.

Bore, and line bore crank and cam, posibly bore the lifters aswell

re assemble with crank, pistons rods and cam

In that case go with the "Taking yer time plan" which involves a donor motor . . .

Least that way you can strip it and check / measure BEFORE ordering anything . . .

Yep, a given.

??? never heard of that - do you get oversize lifters?

Isn't the cam dependant more on the head choice?  Why change it before the heads are in?

What's the advantage of doing it now/disadvantage of doing it later?

if your gonna line bore the cam, your gonna have fresh bearings, so why risk damaging a bearing by swapping out the cam at a later date.

The lifter bores can become warn and they in turn cause the cam to wear un even, you can over bore and re sleeve

It's a TH350, so any SBC should be fine.

But could I put in a cam that is matched to a set of heads that aren't on it yet?

the heads wouldnt matter, but you might need the corect springs in the heads aswell as the valves. Might need to ask about this one

More (and unecessary in the longer term) money.  More reason to do the cam/heads at the same time.

Mine's more fun.

If Jamie pays for my new lump, I'll happily let him borrow my old 305ci.
