Title: # PROJECT # Trans Am - R.I.P
Post by: F Body on September 28, 2006, 06:07:50 pm
Ok welcome to project Trans Am.
Here she is a 1977 ( 1st UK reg in 1980 ) Pontiac Trans Am , 400ci auto.

First the good news she comes with loads of history , she has done 90 something thousand miles and had a top end rebuild and recon gearbox just before she was taken off the road.
She has been well undersealed from new and the chassis rails and sills look fine.

So what's the bad news ?
She hasn't been run for over three years , with the last 8 months being stored outside. All the hoses are shot, the choke doesn't work and
the battery has long since died.

The bottom of the front wings have gone and there's plenty of filler around.

Loads of spare parts including the original wheels & headers etc :

So what other problems have I got ?

If and it's a big "if" the engine and gearbox are OK I'm going to put her back on the road , she would make a tidy daily driver (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

So that's 2nd & 4th Gen F Bodies off the list , now about that 1st Gen (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

Doesn't look too bad.  Certainly looks like the original motor.

Lower wings always go (all have on both mine), but patch panels are cheap and easily available.

I'd also check the floor pans, specifically under the front feet area where it runs from floor to firewall, and under the rear seats.

Did you check the rear frame, specifically where it curves up in front of the axle, and the arms either side of the tank?

I notice there's no seal on the trunk.  What's the floor in there like? Thy're notorious for leaks too, even with the seals.

The other area to check for rust - if possible, is round the front and rear screens. Water can get trapped behind the trim.

Looks good, Martyn.

A bit of a surprise, really.  A good one though. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

What exactly do you want from this car ?

ie. What do you want it to do ?

Also - looking at the engine bay - I reckon I could have fun "trimming off some weight" if you're thinking of dragging her.

Could be the best £200 I've spent (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/grin.gif)

Anyone know how wide across the wheels she is ?
I've got a 4x4 & car transporter trailer sorted for £20 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
Which is  63" wide max on the ramps , the aftermarket wheels are mega wide but I can swop them for the originals to reduce the width if needed.

If it is a poncho 400 block there is easily 500hp accessable without a massive amount of work. All depends on the head numbers, pretty good chance it will have a 'N' crank aswell.

Well I can tell you from experience, the rear arches are the widest part of the car - wider than the mirrors!!

From the pics it looks like the wheels are flush, or possibly even protruding (hence the 'extensions')

If you decide to break rather than restore, I might be interested in a few bits and bobs

Parking space sorted !

£15 per month to park the Panda on next doors drive 24/7 and the Trans Am can go in front of the front door (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

3.2 V6 Frontera sorted from work for towing duty , just need to measure Jamie's wheels on Sunday to check there no more than 63 " wide and will fit the trailer I want to borrow (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

looks like its a poncho motor to me, but it could also be an oldsmobile motor as that was about the time they changed to the 403 olds..

both were badged as 6.6 so i'm guessing the 400 badge on the cowl is a) non origional or b) its the ponch engine...

FWIW, stock the 400 ponch isn't a powerhouse, and the 403 olds is even less so...

in fact, the 1/4 mile is within 1/2 a second of a mustang V6, and the 0 - 60 is slower
google returned 1976 Pontiac Trans Am 400:  0 - 60 9.8   1/4 16.8

nice find, and a great looking car..

Rear wheel measurements.

Outer edge-Outer edge = 70"

Outer edge-Wheel arch = 3" per side.

Therefore, my guess on this other one is 76"

I can lend you a 3rd space saver it it helps (for the front)

Wrong

the 1977 TA came with a 400/403 as standard and the T/A6.6 as an option

they made 68,745 trans ams in 77 out of a total 155,736 firebirds

the 403 is the oldsmobile engine.. 400 or 403 are both generalised as 6.6, and  the 403 was never badged as such, wearing T/A 6.6 badges instead.. that is why the 400 badge sugests to me its probably not the oldsmobile engine, unless its a 400 decal someone put on there for the hell of it..

the last of them had the 403 olds engine, and was cirtainly available in 79

Just spent my first three hours working on the TA (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Prop shaft is off :

But the old girl still wouldn't budge (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)
Took off the near side drum and it was fine with good looking shoes :

Found the problem on the off side with the drum being almost welded on (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)
Time to bring out " Black Beauty " !

The shoes and drum have grooves about 10mm deep in them :

Once I could actually move her away from the wall I finally got to she her rear end - nice ass (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Also found a Haynes and a Chiltern workshop manual in the boot :

After lying under her tonight she seems to be pretty solid , one of the rear wheel nuts is stripped but the tyres look sound.
After reviewing all the paperwork I reakon she was last on the road just over four years ago.

The plan now is to have her "recovered" home on Wednesday morning for £40

Ooh, can I borrow 'Black Betty'?  One of my drums is wedging itself on around the center.  Got it off once to re-do the internals, but I can't get it off again to see if the adjusters are working.  Once off, I'll take the file to it to give a bit more clearance.

Black Beauty ! Zoe named it after painting it with the only spray paint I had which was black.

Pop round anytime Mate it's in the back of the GMC.

Safety First :

You may have noticed that a use a very long extension bar when tightening it up , that's because some dodgy geezer did the welding ( yep me ).

Title: # PROJECT # Trans Am - R.I.P
Post by: F Body on October 04, 2006, 04:57:02 pm
Well here's a run down on todays recovery :

Left the house just after 11:00am to get to Dunstable in plenty of time before the 12:00pm recovery booking.
Just joining the M1 when saidrecovery man rings me to tell me he's on his way and has just left Flitwick.
I arrive at the Trans Am and have just enough time to unlock it and push it forwards before he arrives.
So far so good !
Now it starts to horribly wrong, he is driving a huge van with the longest trailer I've ever seen (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)
Oh I say I thought you coming with a flat bed ?
Was going to but that went out to an accident on the M1 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)
So after about 10 minutes he has the trailing roughly in postion, out he gets with a jump starter pack ?
Err I did tell you it's a non runner ?
Well we'll see he say's , well even if it does start , it hasn't got any water in the radiator and the prop shaft has been removed !
OK how are we going to get it onto the trailer - feking good question (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)
He opens up the back of the van and pulls out a winch, after about half an hour buggering about she's on the trailer :

But not without losing most of the transmission fluid out of the prop shaft housing (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

But at least it was good clean red fluid (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

So off we go :

Joining the M1 :

Once we get back to my gaff he say's that there is no way of getting the huge trailer anywhere near the drive (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)

Oh we'll roll it down the hill he say's , should be interesting without any brakes (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)
So we now spend nearly two hours chocking and re-chocking the wheels until it's near the drive.
The driver, myself and Management then try to push it up the drive, jeez it must weigh about 3 tons !
After 45 minutes we manage to get it half onto the drive and give up !
The driver makes his excuses and leaves with the £40 he quoted, wasn't go to pay any more (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)

Plan "A" was to leave it until tonight and get some help ?
Soon abandoned that plan because of my friendly neighbours don't like me having more than one car !
So onto plan "B" , take the Camaro winch out of the garage and jam it between the garage and under stairs cupboard doors ( good bodge )

Winch car backwards and forwards into place (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
However even with all four wheels chocked she still slides forwards without a handbrake or gear lock (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)
So I jack her up whilst still on the winch and re-fit the prop shaft :

Whilst also noticing that the exhaust system looks brand new , well never really used (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

I finally get her in place and locked in gear so she isn't going anywhere, yes she's a tight fit as the sponge proves :

She overhangs a couple of inches at the point , but I think it's OK !

So what to do now ?
Put the winch back into the garage and put all the tools away, then looking at the sorry state of her time for a quick polish ( still no polishing Smilie )
Two reasons for this , firstly becuase she will look less like a junker to the neighbours and secondly becuase she will get a little protection from the weather.
And here's she is :

Wasn't bad for the money !

Still loads to do but I'm done for today , I think I've broken my back trying to push the b!tch (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Martyn,

If you pm me the chassis  number i will decode it for you, also if you can get the casting number off of the heads i can identify those aswell. It should be over the center exhaust ports

Interesting here's shot of the speedo today :

It's showing 92,491 miles and here's the gearbox receipt showing 92,489 !

So it's only done 2 miles since the rebuild ?
That or the speedo doesn't work ??

The engine top end rebuild was done at 90,625

That's £1,184.64 and only 1,866 miles ago (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)
It also included the exhaust system and Headman headers !

1 set of jump leads.
1 large box of exhaust hangers/brackets/rubbers etc.
Couple of litres of Castrol High Mileage GTX.

The only downside to using visable methods of stopping a car rolling is the potential for little scroats to see them and think it funny to remove them.

When I chock a car I try to do it so it's out of view.

Top tip here for all car mechanics ?
When you have to buy a replacement bulb always buy two , even more so if it's a strange fitting. All the above were replaced from my stock !

So all the lights are working , even the cool side repeaters that go out when the front indicator comes on (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)
The wipers , horn & ciggy lighter are fine, only two things don't work :

1 / The heater blower which might need the engine running ?

2 / The screen washers, the bottle is hanging off so I'll have to check the wires with my meter.

To dark & wet for anything else tonight, stay tuned for another exciting episode tomorrow (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

?

Just been reading up on the 1977 engine options at :

http://www.iwaynet.net/~gl&lisk/transam.html

At the end of the '76 model year, the 455 finally was laid to rest.
Instead of the 455, a pair of  400's and a (gasp) Oldsmobile 403 could be ordered up.
The standard (RPO L78) Pontiac 400 (engine code XA ) was mostly carryover from '76, producing 180hp @ 3600 rpm and 325 lb/ft of torque at 1600 rpm.
The new for 1977 Oldsmobile 403 V8 as an no-charge optional powerplant for all California and high-altitude residences.
These (code U2, U3 high altitude and VA, VB when destined for California) engines are easily identified by the oil fill neck at the very front of the engine.
Horsepower figures for the 403 were 185@3600 rpm, good for a 5 hp bump over the Pontiac 400, yet netted five less Lb/ft of torque (320) at a peakier 2200 rpm.
A revitalized Pontiac 400 was offered in 1977 to take the place of the recently departed 455. Named "T/A 6.6" (6.6 stood for 6.6 litres or 6600 cc, denoting GM's newfound affection for the metric system)the new engine featured a bumped up compression ratio (now 8.1: vs. 7.6:1) by bolting the smaller combustion chambered cylinder heads from the Pontiac 350 onto the 400 block.
The cylinder heads were part number 500801 (the same as the 350 heads). Horsepower was bumped by twenty over the "base" Pontiac 400 motor and peak torque still equalled 325 lb/ft, but occurred 800 rpm higher in the rev range (2400 rpm). Engine ID codes for the T/A 6.6 were WV with a four speed and YG woth the automatic.

Today's update :

Repaired the two spilt hoses and filled her with anti-freeze :

Also repaired the bolt holding the power steering pump ( sorry crappy picture it went really dark just before it chucked it down again ).

Took the old fuel filter off coz it's toast :

Whilst taking the spark plugs out I broke one (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)

As luck would have it the GMC ones are the same size (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

I've numbered all the plug leads and dizzy cap so hopefully I can't get them mixed up ?
Checked the engine oil and it's like new, completely crystal clear and it also looks like a new filter (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
Going to get a new fuel filter, refill the trans fluid and see if she runs hopefully sometime over the weekend ?
I've also bolted the battery down and replaced some missing bolts from the front cowl.
So many jobs , so little time (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

All I can see above the rear spark plugs are the letters D & N ?

Can't find a proper number or code, there is no way it's a 305 it's just too big, it fills the width of the engine bay to within 1/2".

All pontiac engines were the same size mate so a 455 would be the same as a 305. So don't be fooled by size.

I will ask a few questions as to where the block number is

ok block numbers are on the front, left of the timing cover. the casting number and date are by the dizzy hole

77 400s used x or y to start and a cast 7 by distributor

cast # of 568557 for the 400 1977-79

Saturday update No.1.

Just got back from USless Automotive in Bedford when Jamie arrived to borrow black beauty.
I now have a new air filter spot the difference ?

A new stud for holding the air filter in place and a new chrome ( we like shiney (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif) ) cleanable fuel filter. It unscrews so that you can clean it.
Also two new spark plugs ( 1 spare )

Only one of the headlights is toast and it's the only one which isn't a sealed beam unit ?
US Auto have them in stock but their £29.81 + vat (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

So I'm going to try and bodge it , spilt the glas from the back and try my chrome silver spray paint. Ain't gona cost anything so it's worth a try !

So I've spent £20.15p today making a total so far of £260.15p.

I've also priced ( +vat ) the following parts most of which are in stock (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Set of rear brake shoes £27.00

Foot brake cable front £27.56
Foot brake cable either side £11.95 each.

Rear Brake Cylinder £ 18.19 each.

Truck Seal Weather Strip £ 17.20.

Rear Drum £ 37.31 each - although Jamie may have a good used one (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Front Fender bottom repair panel £89.28 each (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

An in line electric washer pump is less than a fiver which is better than US Auto's £35.48 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)

So a quick calculation estimates another £161 inc VAT to get to MOT time, if everything else works ?
Giving an estimated total of £421.15p just to see if it fails an MOT (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/can.gif)

NB : Excludes the fender repair panels, brake drum and headlight.

Must dash I've got an engine to try and get going , more updates later !

Well I've just had to spend another £3.99 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

She turns over and is sparking but fuel was spraying out of the upper fuel line, so I had to get some new hose. The strange thing is that the leaking bit of hose looks the best in the engine bay (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif)

Well she runs (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/grin.gif)
Took a while to get her to fire up and had to manually close/open the non working choke.

So you might be expecting (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/manynanas.gif)

But you'd be wrong (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Tis better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all !

It appears the engine is toast (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)
No smoking, but terrible mechanical noise like the pistons are grinding up and down the bores.
I even took off the drive belts to check it wasn't the Alternator or water pump but it made no difference.
Here's a video of her painful running :

http://s29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/fbody007/Project%20Trans%20Am/th_MOV00001.jpg

I am absolutely gutted, I really really wanted to get her back onto the road, I've already phoned the previous owner to tell him the bad news (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Not going to do anything yet, apart from drinking lots of beer tonight (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cheers.gif)

Thanks for taking an interest and please accept my humble apologies for failing.

Erm, yeah, but you can get cheap rebuild bits surely?

For what the car has cost so far...

I know Summit sell 350 Chevy (yes I know, different engine) rebuild kits which include new pistons.  You can add rods and a crank for not that much more.

Even if it cost another grand to get it running ok you'd still have something worth loads more on your hands...

Post by: EDGE on October 07, 2006, 11:27:17 pm
summit kits are DIRT cheap... sounds like a plan.. you'll need an engine stand too if you're gonna lift the motor out.. but apart from that you should be ok.. unless it needs a rebore.. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

either way, its still dirt cheap.... but.. I call dibbs if it goes up for sale (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Well he did want to drop a turbo on it, if we can get it running i want to use it to run SRS next year. Of course a call will be made to my mate andy mitchell king of pontiac engines and see what he can do (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/devil.gif) he just did a junkyard jewel pontiac 400 motor for hot rod magazine and made well over 400hp on a very limited budget

Nice idea but on a sloping drive outside in winter it just ain't gona happen (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

As I said at the start of Project Trans Am , it was a four stage project :

1 / Does the engine run OK ?

2 / Does the gearbox work OK ?

3 / Does it pass an MOT ?

4 / Rolling restoration.

I'm not making any money on the sale, but she's is hopefully going to someone with a large barn to put her in and the tools/equipment and time to get her back on the road.

Broken

Kinda - i got two tyres that are knackered - on the inner edge of the tyre, i gone through the outer rubber, through the canvas AND then trhough the metal and it started perrishing the inner rubber to the state that they both flat and one of burst (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

i had hankook death sliders on the xr2 at one point.. closely followed by a pair of dark horse ditch diviners.... what a w4nk set of tires...

I've got a set of Marshal's on the Oldsmobile and they are possibly the quietest and best riding tyre I have ever bought.. plus they grip like sh!t to a blanket...

The Saleen has pirelli p-zero on the front and dunlop sp9000 on the back.. absolutely awesome grip, ust incredible on the street...

Well they stick ok on the chavscort and i dont exactly drive like a granny although chasing that porsch back from MK the other week they were a little livley on the twisting back roads of deanshanger then again at 105mph the whole car was pretty much on the edge, but kept with the bastid (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

lol..... they were ok in a straight line but the xr2 had no body roll so any slip angle from the tyres was amplified... it was fairly scary at some points.. plus the xr2 weighed naff all so there wasnt much weight on each tyre therefore the grip coefficient was high but the ultimate grip was poo....
