I'm still in awe at how sound she appears.

Well just remember to look at the pictures at the start of this thread, hopefully not a basket case but it's still very much work in progress.

Long term plans include buying a MIG welder and learning to spray

Today's update :

Repaired the two spilt hoses and filled her with anti-freeze :

Also repaired the bolt holding the power steering pump ( sorry crappy picture it went really dark just before it chucked it down again ).

Took the old fuel filter off coz it's toast :

Whilst taking the spark plugs out I broke one

As luck would have it the GMC ones are the same size

I've numbered all the plug leads and dizzy cap so hopefully I can't get them mixed up ?
Checked the engine oil and it's like new, completely crystal clear and it also looks like a new filter
Going to get a new fuel filter, refill the trans fluid and see if she runs hopefully sometime over the weekend ?
I've also bolted the battery down and replaced some missing bolts from the front cowl.
So many jobs , so little time

All I can see above the rear spark plugs are the letters D & N ?

Can't find a proper number or code, there is no way it's a 305 it's just too big, it fills the width of the engine bay to within 1/2".
It makes the Camaro's LS1 engine look small

All pontiac engines were the same size mate so a 455 would be the same as a 305. So don't be fooled by size.

I will ask a few questions as to where the block number is

ok block numbers are on the front, left of the timing cover. the casting number and date are by the dizzy hole

77 400s used x or y to start and a cast 7 by distributor

cast # of 568557 for the 400 1977-79

Saturday update No.1.

Just got back from USless Automotive in Bedford when Jamie arrived to borrow black beauty.
I now have a new air filter spot the difference ?

A new stud for holding the air filter in place and a new chrome ( we like shiney ) cleanable fuel filter. It unscrews so that you can clean it.
Also two new spark plugs ( 1 spare )

Only one of the headlights is toast and it's the only one which isn't a sealed beam unit ?
US Auto have them in stock but their £29.81 + vat

So I'm going to try and bodge it , spilt the glas from the back and try my chrome silver spray paint. Ain't gona cost anything so it's worth a try !

So I've spent £20.15p today making a total so far of £260.15p.

I've also priced ( +vat ) the following parts most of which are in stock

Set of rear brake shoes £27.00

Foot brake cable front £27.56
Foot brake cable either side £11.95 each.

Rear Brake Cylinder £ 18.19 each.

Truck Seal Weather Strip £ 17.20.

Rear Drum £ 37.31 each - although Jamie may have a good used one

Front Fender bottom repair panel £89.28 each

An in line electric washer pump is less than a fiver which is better than US Auto's £35.48

So a quick calculation estimates another £161 inc VAT to get to MOT time, if everything else works ?
Giving an estimated total of £421.15p just to see if it fails an MOT

NB : Excludes the fender repair panels, brake drum and headlight.

Must dash I've got an engine to try and get going , more updates later !

It's the dipped beam unit

Saturday update No.2.

Well I've just had to spend another £3.99

She turns over and is sparking but fuel was spraying out of the upper fuel line, so I had to get some new hose. The strange thing is that the leaking bit of hose looks the best in the engine bay

Well she runs
Took a while to get her to fire up and had to manually close/open the non working choke.

So you might be expecting

But you'd be wrong

Tis better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all !

It appears the engine is toast
No smoking, but terrible mechanical noise like the pistons are grinding up and down the bores.
I even took off the drive belts to check it wasn't the Alternator or water pump but it made no difference.
Here's a video of her painful running :

http://s29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/fbody007/Project%20Trans%20Am/th_MOV00001.jpg

I am absolutely gutted, I really really wanted to get her back onto the road, I've already phoned the previous owner to tell him the bad news

Not going to do anything yet, apart from drinking lots of beer tonight

Thanks for taking an interest and please accept my humble apologies for failing.
