Titsy's Camaro Paint Job
« on: August 22, 2012, 09:33:38 am »
OK, inspired by RK's satin black 3rd gen i've been considering my 4th gen LT1 and how I've not done anything with it for 12 months. Basically, other jobs and moving Jackie in with me has mean I've been busy doing other things, but I'm determined to make some time for tinkering, and paint is on the list!

The lacquer is letting go in various places and the paint job overall has never really been fantastic, but I haven't got the cash for a complete respray in the current metallic finish. so the question is

Will Satin Black work on an LT1 4th gen?

Pole here but comments and debate welcome: http://www.mkb.cc/forum/index.php?action=poll&pollaction=vote&pollID=32

Can't seem to vote, but, I think the example pic isn't a good one as it doesn't really suit those wheels.

I think, take the wheels out of that pic (Yes, you'd have a very slow car, har har), but I think it works personally....

For a car as "modern" as yours I think it would have to be a very good paint job, I reckon imperfections will really show up.

Saying that I don't hate the picture above...would be nice to see it in the "flesh" first though.

Contradiction in terms... I can't show it to you if it hasn't been done...

Obviously I meant the car in the picture or another that has been done.
Even Dean's, though an older model may give an idea..

1st one looks patchy (my concern) second one looks good

No to the red stripes... but the red rim on the wheels... not sure.

Well this goes to show how much people opinions differ, i personally think the top shot looks the tits!

Those wheels suit it well, they give it a mean stance, and the paint job works really well with the lines. As posted in the other thread by Rob, satin doesn't work so well with a Firebird or Trans Am as the front end is far too busy and there are too many scoops and little grille bits.

imho i think it suits the car, and with the red wheels to , even standard camaro wheels might look decent in black and red.
however it really does,nt matter what colour it is, jackie will always be faster than you in it

Obvious question that no-one's asked . . . How is Satin lack going to be any cheaper ?

Don't listen to the morons out there who say that painting satin is easier than gloss because it is not.  Gloss can be wet-flatted and polished to get rid of drips and runs . . . . Satin is a one-shot deal.

Get it right first time, no second chances.

It p!sses me off when some complete pleb assumes they know what they're talking about when they don't (and I don't mean you, Titsy)

As for cost the prep work will all be the same, time spent will all be the same, equipment (unless rattlecanning it) will all be the same and materials will be very similar.

Clear cost will be the only difference between the two.

Of course it's illegal to paint your Camaro in Cellulose (but not mine) so you either 2K it (pro job) or Celly it and be naughty !

Cellulose is now basically illegal.  From what I've been told it's only available for sale to hobbists to paint "classic" automobiles/vehicles.

The definition, in this case, of classic is 25 years old.  Which is handy.

The only way it would be cheaper is the same way a solid colour would be cheaper; like you said no clear coat as it's not metallic like the current paint... I could go for a solid gloss colour but I quite like the look of satin, so wasn't suggesting it as the easy option but an option I quite like.

I will admit that I had been led to believe that satin was more forgiving and also as you'd been talking about wet sanding after I thought you'd shot all the satin. So knowing that it's not as forgiving may sway me to a gloss rather than satin. But I do really like the satin! I wasn't thinking it was going to be a cake walk ever way though.

I'm thinking of having a word with my cousin (who my dad grew up with) as he used to do paint and bodywork for a living in his own business, but now works for Merc in MK IIRC but not sure what doing. If he's willing to teach me or have me lacky while he does the skilled bits then I'm hoping to get it done without the cost of a shop done job...

As for Celly, how exactly is it enforced?

Only by the vendor, AFAIK . . . in other words it's not.  Not really.

Cannay see no poll Ian?

Whats the going rate for a full body respray? Probably the same as asking how long is a piece of string, but a decent spray in metallic?
