Not a clue...

Actually this isn't something like the Gas rotisserie that we were eyeing up and discussing in Brighton is it?
It's the time that we kill that keeps us alive...

Isn't this the part of home brewing where it usually ends up in the papers?

No, but it's good learning to pull apart a gas BBQ - given me some ideas for later . . .

I must confess . . I thought it'd be kinda cool to build, and knew it was gonna be an utter PITA to assemble but SERIOUSLY.  I need 3 pairs of hands to make it !

I did assemble three eighths of the main section last night . . . I'll have another crack at it tonight . . .

is it a bbq
 with a concrete base

with enough spare heat to heat a 3 bed house

Probably a very expensive method of doing under-floor heating . . .

But, yes.  It's heating water . . . .

Some quick pics . . .

I found it easier assembling each half-manifold, clamping it together and soldering the whole thing . . .

Fun with flames

I spaced the two half-manifolds using 35mm copper pipe off-cuts and secured them using copper wire so they'd be rigid enough to add the last U-bend (joining the two halves and making the complete manifold) . . . .

Material cut and ready for the last two full manifolds . . .

 . . .

Hopefully I'll have 3 out of the 4 manifolds complete tonight . . . I'd hoped to do more last night but got back from work late.

hhhmm .. heat exchanging

 needs a lot of heat,
for it to be an efficient way of heating water, you would need to be reclaiming heat that is being wasted...
rather that using a fuel to heat the exchanger..

Dunno.

I thought "F*ck it.  Let's have a go !!"

Anyway . . . Here's manifolds 1,2 & 3 . . . hopefully get "4" made tonight and then start making up the trunks to branch them together.

It's getting pretty big.

That's going to have quite a capacity for whatever your pumping through it. If the intention is to heat your product by passing it through the tube then small diameter tube probably would have been more efficient in volume and exchange. Probably could have just used 8 or 10mm tube with a bender or by hand and saved a lot of soldering / week points. Unless of course you need a high flow rate, in which case a larger bore is a better choice.

Yes.

Yes.

The plan originally was to use 10mm microbore but it'd be difficult to create anything rigid and self-supporting (it's supplied in coils).  The 15mm pipe was larger than I wanted but is straight and rigid so lends itself nicely.
Using 10mm pipe would've been harder in the long-run simply because I'd have needed to create a framework to mount the tube on first.
Even then you can still create a smaller radius using 15mm 90* bends over manually bent 10mm microbore.

week points

Not really weak points.  I used end feed fittings not only to save a bit of money but also because they're stronger than solder-ring fittings.  I've gone heavy on the solder so the "weak points" should actually be pretty tough.

The pump I'll be (initially) using has an output pipe of 35mm approx . . . My input is going to be 28mm . . . .

I'm not sure what the long-term set-up will be (that'll depend on the results after testing) but there's the option to fit a valve on the outlet to reduce the flow-rate through the manifolds . . . thus giving it more time to heat.

I hope to be ready for testing this weekend . . . and the tests will be done in the utter, utter worst case scenario so any success will be a major one.

The temperature gauges arrived today.

(I've just been testing their accuracy - they're pretty spot-on).

The first will be fitted to the input pipe, the second to the output . . . this will initially indicate the "cold" efficiency of the set-up but I can also play with a few other factors (at a later date) to maximise efficiency.

Got the 4 manifolds all tied together and spaced last night . . . then started work on making the 2 trunks that'll connect them all together (the first trunk is sitting on the top).

The plan is to finish assembling tonight and test tomorrow !
