I must be getting soft . . . the thought of tuning 3 stromberg '97's isn't exciting me.

The alternative :

It's not on the brought list - just "To buy".

Easy, yeah.

It's just my Edelbrock tri-power (same height as stock) plus three injector bodies (same height as carb) plus filters (probably smaller then stock housing)

V Cool.

Such throttle bodies *tend* to give high hp, high rpm performance as opposed to low to mid range torque grunt so migh tbe better suited to a lightwieght roadster maybe?

It's map-able so as far as I understand you should be able to tweak it and make pre-sets . . .

It checks itself every second I believe and is self-learning.

Sounds the mutts anyway . . .

Indeed, sounds good.

But the problem is the short runner, ie the distance to the intake port on the head from where the air first enters the system.

Hence the likes of the TPI which has those curved runners on the side.  The air enters the plenum, then goes down the runner on say the left continues through the intake manifold to the head on the right (ie the opposite side) thus giving a 17" (iirc) runner length in total.  This gives a hiuge increase in mid range torque, at the expense of the ability to rev past 4,500rpm though.  Changing to a short runner system, say a 5 inch length like the Stealth or Mini Ram, loses that chunk of torque in the mid-range, but can then rev happily to 6 grand with the end result being more horsepower.
The Caddy is a heavy car so you want low and mid range torque more than high rpm hp I would have thought.  (I'm no expert mind)

The TPI system is actually quite trick because when the intake valve closes the wave of air (in effect) bounces back up the tube to teh plenum forcing more air down the tube on the opposite side of the plenum, which just happens to be the next cylinder that is filling.  Devious.

the problem will be with the runners though, being so short they may not match the characteristics of your engine..

if you had the specs of the engine and head i could work out how long a runner you'd need if you like.  I'll have to have a look on the spreadsheet of power and see what specs i need though, I cant remember off hand.

on a side note, a fuel injected variable runner intake would be super sweet on your motor once it's done... how much hood clearence do you have?  I was working on one for a certain pointy yack but it never got decided on in the end..... could hook that in to a mappable ignition and fuel system to give the peak gain throughout the rev range..... long runners down low and short runners high up :)

I think I just about understood all that, HRC.

Ignore the manifold shown in the picture (it's not included)

The manifold I have is this one :

Do you think something like this (6x2) would be better ?

still fairly short runners but what spec is the engine and where is its peak power ?

quite a high compression ratio then, but is it a longer stroke than bore ?

After seeing a 'Rod with a home made high-rise intake at the NSRA show I'm tempted to have a pop at it myself.

lol...

its not as easy as it looks to do properly, there are all sorts of issues that you have to look at, like helmholtz resonance and pulses..

plus you really need to decide where you are adding the fuel.. a manifold that only contains air can be far more complex as if you use a carb on top, the air contains fuel which is prone to condensation and puddling...

also there's the air velocity to look at and match the cam profile to the runner lengths....

Ain't that the truth, just look at Edge's re-mapping saga
There are far greater error margins using a carb than fuel injection

You're, of course, missing the point that this is a 50 year old car.

Yes performance is important . . . economy not so . . . But the main thing . . . . Let's face it, above ALL ELSE it's gotta look cool.

The Caddy's going Custom . . I want it to look Custom and work . . . but I won't loose sleep If I'm not getting 100% out of it . . .

Lot of money to spend on something which isn't going to look as good as a triple carb set up and not work properly

O.K.

Imagine this . . . .

The 3x2 Carb Manifold as shown here :

PLUS three of these, increasing the runner thingy length and creating a monster 6x2 Carb set up !!!

Now your getting the idea

May be I'm old school but I just love the to look at the linkages etc on a three carb set up

And with a 6x2 set up you'll have double the linkages !
