Thought I'd add a mini update . . . New panels aquired and waiting at Carls for shipping - as is replacment (mph) speedo.

Also ordered some reflectors for the rear mud guard . . . this may sound petty but there's supposed to be ones on there and they've been ripped off leaving nasty holes . . .

The pictures explain themselves . . .

Before.

After (the refectors, by chance, are the EXACT correct size and look utterly stock).

Next jobs are to fit the new speedo, spray / clean up and fit the new side panels and then finish stitching the seat up.

She just completed a run to Hastings and back over the weekend . . . didn't miss a beat and was utterly dependable.

She has, however, reminded me that the clutch now badly needs changing.

That said I'm hoping to limp her through to the end of October when I'll likely pick up a 4-wheeled beater for winter - then I can get all the little jobs like that done in the garage over winter.

She's almost paid for herself already at a mere £445.

The black block under the front headlight with Yamaha written on it, is that a brake cooler or something? Can't completely work out where the tubes going into it go.

It's a brake splitter, diverting fluid to each side of the front wheel (dual calipers).

It also houses/shields electrical relays and such.

Update on the old girl . . .

Seems she didn't appreciate sitting out in the snow, unstarted, for three months !

We got her going last weekend but, alas, the battery seems fooked.

I've now got a new set of 4 NGK plugs and 4 NGK plug caps to fit (car spares 4 teh win).

Will order the battery on saturday.

Well.  Got the plugs and caps fitted - all good.

Got the battery fitted but it seems it's a dud so will be replacing that shortly . . .

Meanwhile the fuel tank started leaking (again - but from another place) so she's been pulled apart so I can repair the tank and give the body panels a full re-spray (am going gloss black) and while the panels were off PhilO fixed the brake-light-circuit issue.

The horn stopped working in Hastings last year so I've also ordered a new one.

A year's Tax is in the post and she'll be going for an MoT as soon as she's back together.

Not too bad for a hard-working 24 year old bike.

Not too bad for a 24 year old bike left to rot outside.

Admittedly, if I didn't, I wouldn't be wasting time repainting her, that's for sure !

Update.

Basically I've sanded the tank down, primered, high-build primered and treated it with tank sealer.
I've repaired the front mud guard that was in two bits held together with silicone ! . . . It's now a bit heavier but it ain't gonna come apart anytime soon !
Have also filled the whooping great big holes in the rear panel . . I only need 8mm holes to fit the lights but there were 30mm !
Have also prepped and primered some of the clip-on side panels for paint and fitted the new horn.
Am picking up the replacement battery on Tuesday.

Here's the mud guard and rear panel after filling :

The tank after treating and high-build :

The poor ole' girl in bits :

Looking good, but please please don't waste all that hard work and effort by painting it matte black

You didn't but that doesn't mean you wouldn't

It would look stunning in a deep metallic colour

It's a 24 year old commuter, Martyn !

What's the point of going silly with it.

FYI it's going GLOSS black . . . not metallic, not pearl - straight black gloss/clear.

The front mud gaurd, tank and rear panel plus all the smaller side panels (3 pairs) have seen 4 coats of gloss black and upto 7 coats of clear.

I painted them at work on friday and collected them this morning.

Pretty impressed . . . the painting went really well but the clear was a bit finer than I anticipated so I got a couple of runs . . . no biggie - they'll wet n' dry out.

Got the replacement battery after a minor hiccup.

Got the horn fitted and tested.

PhilO kindly fitted the MPH speedo.

And I just ordered a new fuel filter and tax disc holder.

Will start fine wet n' drying later this week with an aim to re-assemble this weekend.

Pictures to follow - when I get the time.
