Kumho's for the win

Well when I finally get the Camaro back together it will be interesting to drive it on the new Kumho's ?

Only ever driven it with Goodyear Eagles, so I'm eager to see any difference in ride quality ( what ride quality - it's an F Body ) and tyre noise ?

New tyres are fitted and on the car.
Those, and the rear suspension mods (Maximum Motorsport lower control arms, Ford C springs and Tokico non-adjustable shocks) enabled me to get a 2.2 60' time at the Mopars beating my previous best of 2.4.
Best time at the Mopars was a 14.78, so a tiny bit slower than my best. However, it was quite hot and a fairly strong headwind resulting in a loss of about 4 mph. Given some decent weather, faster times are a definite possibility.

Latest update:

One of the new back tyres has a slow puncture. Actually, I think it's a problem with the wheel rather than the tyre. I've killed my electric pump too.

Better news is that me and my assistant Graeme spent Saturday fitting the new front suspension parts.

Early start - 8.30am

Took a little while to figure out what needed to come out and how, and where things went back in again, but it went fairly well. Broke both sway bar end links, so I need to order a new set. It's running on Graeme's home made set now.
Found a shiny looking nut on the ground under the car but didn't think anything of it...

All was going well until the very last part to take off - the last control arm bolt. That thing was not going to budge no matter how hard we hit it!
Tried everything we could think of to get the damn thing out. Eventually managed it with a slide hammer and about 2 hours!
After that, everything went back in fine.

Took it for a quick drive to make sure everything worked ok. No horrible noises and nothing fell off, so back to tidy everything up and go home.

Nothing's ever that easy though - the damn thing wouldn't start! Just a high speed ratchet sound from the starter motor. A starter motor that is brand new and only been on the car a couple of months!
Jacked the car up (on a steep slope a few inches away from the gate post ) and took a look under the car.
It turns out that the shiny nut we found earlier had fallen off the starter motor! I reckon it was all the banging and hammering on the car that knocked it loose.
Put that back on and everything was (finally!) back to normal.

We could have finished by about 1pm if it wasn't for the control arm bolt and the starter motor. As it was, we finished somewhere around 6pm.

Finished up using Graeme's new alignment tool to set the caster and camber. Great little tool it is too. The Maximum Motorsports plates make it really easy to adjust as well.

Also fitted a new ignition coil in between. The new one looks suspiciously similar to the stock one so I'm not expecting any major difference. It was cheap and it's yellow though.

Pictures are in the gallery.

I told you it would only take a day mate, would have been even quicker if it wasnt for that damn bolt but a 12lb slid hammer soon took care of that

As for the starter motor i put it down to poor instalation

Not so much sensible as totally skint.
I'll definitely be looking for another set of those when I do have some cash though.

According to the dyno it peaks around 4900-5000.
Trouble is, stock tachs are supposedly not the most accurate things in the world, especially at the high end. So I've not figured out where that point is yet.

Carb?!?!

The most limiting part of my engine are the stock heads. There's no way it's going to rev to 6500, and even if it did the power drops off way before then so there's not much point.

I've got no idea how the dyno was hooked up - I didn't look.

Quick update.

Most of the air con system has been removed. It had no gas in it whatsoever, not even the slightest hiss. Still got a couple of bits to take off, then I need to fit the new brackets which move the power steering pump up.

I've even bought some Tesco's bathroom scales for 3 quid to see how much the removed parts weigh.

Pictures coming soon....

Ray Comer ( Fat Boy ) told me that 100kg of weight saving is worth 0.1 of a second ?

The main reason to remove the air con was to free up space in the engine bay. It's certainly done that.

Any weight it does save is a bonus. Trying to push the car down the firing up lane at Santa Pod was a nightmare. I gave up in the end and drove it.

Unfortunatly, the more the car weighs, the less difference it make when you loose a few pounds; simple percentages... I worked out that loosing 100kg my 4th gen would make 12HP per ton... 100kg is a lot to loose though...
