Upgrade Questions
« on: April 02, 2007, 07:22:11 pm »
Going to upgrate my computer now..  First question - I currently have 512mb of ram..  im going to get a 1gb stick to put in.. SO can i put the 1gb with the 512 to give me 1512 ??  or am i better off just getting another stick of 512 to make 1gb?

Next question - whats the best graphics card to get for ok money.. by OK i mean around 50 quid.. i dont want to spend toooo much on my computer!!   i have a HDMI port thing on my monitor that im not using right now as my current gfx card doesnt support it..

urm..  oh yah, whats all this about having to upgrade the power supply too if im putting in more memory etc?  according to my spec its a 305w...

In theory you can just pop in another 512 make sure its the same rating

any ATI 256mb card will do, hdmi aint gunna happen on a £50 card although i havent seen one at any price yet. suppose i should look.

PSU well upgrade to a 400 or 450 at least, not because of the memory and GFX card but for overall stability and further upgrade options.

So my question is: What components do you have now and what can you afford?

what do you do with the pc what would you like to do?  gimme all the info i need and i will find the best parts for you.

Regards

Thanks allan..  Ive seen most stuff i want on ebuyer..
Games and net browsing i use teH PC for..
i have:

P4 2.8Mhz
512 ram
Radeion?? x300 / x550 gfx - idk what rating
some standard soundcard
80gb HDD
19" WS monitor with DVI input
broken CD burner

I want:
1gb+ ram
kick ass gfx card with DVI so i can run a higher res on this monitor
a soundcard able to throw out surround sound so i can put those really good headphones in and stop annoying everyone with BOOOM HEADSHOT!!
a cheapish DVD burner - not that bothered but whilst im upgrading...
also a cool little purple neon light to put in the recess of the case would look l33t...

COULD i run the 1gb and 512 together?

Graphics cards I figured this one looked ok..

Roger that on the PSU!! will add that to the list..

See what you can find

Dont worry its usually just a case of fitting the right components. They build their stuff for resupply too. TRY to make it so that you can only buy bits from them!!

the only trouble with the dell is going to be if it all fits, might pay to photo the insides of yer pc to let us judge if it will.

the memory should be fine, but the other 2 parts may or may not fit.

tanks allan

I didnt realise that dell made it hard to upgrade - the only reason i made sure it had a great processor and didnt up the ram etc is so i could upgrade it later..

I will open the case for the first time tonight allan and take some pictures - no point buying it if its not going to fit right?  Will have to be careful its been a while since playing with computer parts, im still in fix my vdub with maHosive hammer mindstate...

Just looking around on ebuyer.. That card you found for 50 quid for 512mb seems a real good price..  Ive always thought the more memory the better but looking around everyone seems to be wacking off over cards like GeForce 6600 GT with only 128mb..  Why?

Just because they are Nvidea freaks, like linux hippies they are blinded by the fact that it take 47 weeks and much fiddling later to get the damn things to work correctly in games.

If you want to plug and pray and sacrifice a goat then get a geforce (woosh sounds fast huh)

Just my 2 pence worth.

But in reality its like some people do not like AMD, the same goes for Nvidea and ATI.

26" eh.. i figured i was pushing the dingy out at 19".

i think with gfx cards ill get http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/109760/rb/26644380590 instead because people are saying its much much better for games and for 27 quid more it makes sense as im trying to make my PC a decent gaming machine without spending 10000000000 on it like those 'pro' gamers do.. or more like "daddy can i have 1000 pounds I want a new mouse"

I'd always had Nvidia GFX cards up until buying my new ATI one... and then the fan broke  which i'm sure isn't normal, but it goes like the proverbial sh1t off a shovel!
