Can't say it's made any real leap beyond the iPhone, aside from turn by turn directions included as standard instead of having to pay for the TomTom app.

But probably one of the best choices for anyone who specifically doesn't want an iPhone (for whatever reason).

iPhone is an uber piece of kit..

This is too, but more focused for online. Also, total synergy with all your Google services, gmail, gmaps, gdocs, gcalender etc etc.

Also with being able to run multiple applications at onces makes it more like a laptop, switching between them..

I do like the iPhone, but this is the one I've been waiting for - 5mpx camera and LED flash with the latest 2.1 Flan Andriod OS on it, made by the people that designed the OS..

'Spring' apparently..

You can order one sim free from that link, plus $29 shipping, then our extortionate taxes and duty ontop.... oh and the post office £10 fee for paying the duty 'for' you..

Estimates are around £440 delivered from Google. Benefit buying direct from Google is you can have it engraved with a message al la iPods / Touch. Going to wait to see what Expansis will be selling it for http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=193858.

I would agree with that. A monopoly is never good Microsoft .

Out too late/expensive for my upgrade so I'll probably still go for the Hero.  Plus I'm still not sure I want such a big phone...

Not keen on that tbh. A friend has one and I had a play on it, didn't think much of the roller ball.

Correct. Difference between the Hero and the Nexus One is that the Nexus has been designed and engineered BY Google, manufactured by HTC. The Hero was HTC's own attempt at a handset correct for Android.

Google felt that it was taking too long to show the industry what the Android platform can do with the current mediocre handsets, so designed the Nexus.

Yeah its not pretty but if I wanted a fashion accessory I would buy an iPhone

I had a track ball on my Orbit and have to admit I missed it when I upgraded to the Orbit 2.
Found many reviewers think it a good feature.  You dont have to use it but its a useful backup if your wearing gloves etc. (capacitive screen).

I hear they will get a free upgrade to Android 2 as well

Either way it the best I can get for my budget otherwise I would wait for the Nexus or get the HTC HD2

I've had a Hero for a few months now and I think I've only ever used the rollerball thingy a couple of times when using the camera. Never used it otherwise.

It is a brill phone; love it.

Yeer, the Roller Ball is there as a secondary input device, mainly for games, camera etc.. On the Nexus it also lights up three different colours as an alert signal.

Not sure about the three colours but does the same on the Hero.

It can be cool to buck the trend, but when doing so denies you the best platform out there, does seem a bit silly no?

Nothing to do with bucking the trend.  Though I don't follow blindly just because it has a picture of an Apple on the case.
I've tried it, with an open mind and found the phone just isn't worth the money.

Simple as that.

Give me a clam-shell phone with good ole' fashioned buttons anyday.

I don't see the point of all this touch-screen crap.  It looks very pretty, sure, but is more expensive and more prone to damage.  Plus they're getting f*cking HUGE !  I remember in the old days where people wanted small and compact . . . . now it's big and bulky.

Plus, plus.  What the flying-f*ck do you actually need out of a phone anyway !!??

well.. i NEED

phone

text messaging

contacts

calendar

email - so i can check my jobs while out

iPodness - my phone holds more than my iPod so I dont take the iPod out anymore

Photo album display - I often show people my photos on the phone, showing them on a normal phone is TERRIBLE.  My mate has a habbit of chucking me her sony K whatever and telling me to flick though the hotos, the screen is SO small its pointless

googlemap - been handy on MANY occasions as my satnav is pretty old

HANDY features are

twitter skype and wordpress clients, ebay and papal, airshare, apple remote and facebook (sometimes)

its different if youre infront of a computer all day and have access to everything, but if youre out and about, once you get used to haveing everything there, and then if someone suggests you dont need it, you think, but why would i give it up?

its a bit like someone saying, what do you need in a car, who needs aircon, a radio/cd player, leather seats, airbags, abs, etc.... yeah, it'll be a more expensive car, and more likely to go wrong,  but we want it still....

unless you buy a BMW, in which i believe all the above, are still options....

I would go along with all the of the above.

I've only had mine about 3 months or so and I can see how they quickly become part of your life. My sister was mocking me for how I've lost touch now I have one yet at the weekend she picked hers up, with my old man making his the next purchase when he gets a chance.

They're damn useful and have got me out of quite a few tricky situations. The maps feature I've found really useful, although I do still like finding places just by using my head, when it comes to work having the ability to pull up a map, a contact number and even a photo of what the building looks like is very handy.

Its just everything a computer can do, (and more in some cases) at a really handy size, that fits in your pocket and can be carried around with you.

I don't look at it as a fashion symbol, I use it as a tool, I have a great big protective case on it, even though I have the white one it still looks black

The other reason I'd choose it over any other 'smart phone' is because of it's backup. Apple are hardly likely to drop the thing over night and there is a huge arrange of accessories out there.

The more dependent you are on your phone the more lost you are without it.

I for one don't want to become dependent on a piece of PCB in a plastic case with a screen and a battery attached to it.

I - personally - use a phone for phoning people (odd, that) and only text when I'm out of my free minutes !

I've tried "surfing" on a phone and hated it.

You'll all be getting excited over handbags - sorry - carry-cases next . . . . .
