Looks usable!

Does a 2-phase and 3-phase welder plug into 240 mains as well or are they hard wired?

you can use some 3phase as single phase, on a 13amp plug,

but for the higher settings they will pull 15 amps plus..

i suspect mine can be 3 phase...

If you did want to run a 3-phase welder as a 3-phase, how is it done?

What I mean is, is there a different connection like the 110V mains connectors?

you connect it to 3 phases...
or as a single you use 1 phase and a neutral...

Three phase connector (but then you have to have a three phase supply and you only really get that on commercial premises...:

Aha, that's what I was wondering!

Next question, why are there 5 connections? I would have thought it would be 4: 1 for each phase and 1 neutral

One per phase
One neutral
One earth...

Although you don't always need a neutral with some three phase equipment..

Gas may occupy 5,000 litres of volume when released into the atmosphere, but clearly, under pressure, it's not 5,000 litres as it's in liquid form so is a fraction of that.

It's like saying that a full kettle holds 3,000 litres of steam . . . technically it does but there's other factors involved.
