New to iTunes...
« on: September 13, 2006, 10:08:57 pm »
Seen as i'll be making the leap and buying an ipod soon I thought i'd make the leap & install itunes too.

So, how can I convert all my existing .mp3 and .wma files to whatever format it is itunes uses... or will it play them anyway?

Can you use itunes to record CDs?

You can set the iTunes library to be stored wherever you want.
It's advisable to let iTunes copy whatever music you have to its own folder structure.

Once you have it all in there delete the old copies.

If you want maximum cross-platform compatibility you can set iTunes to rip CD's in mp3 format instead of AAC (just have a look through the preferences) you can also set the bitrate.

To import old mp3s I just drag and drop them into the library (now music) window.

When it comes to burning a CD iTunes can burn either a CD full of mp3 files, or an audio CD for you to use in a regular CD player.  Again. see the preferences screens.

To burn a CD you need to make a playlist of the songs you want and then, with that playlist selected, just click the burn icon in the top right of the screen.

Yeah it's the same as the purchased music from the store which is fine.

I tend to use mp3 so I have my bitrate set to 256Kbps as mp3 isn't as good as Apple lossless.

To be honest, now that:

A) I will never use Windows
B) Can't imagine ever using a portable other than an iPod
C) iTunes and iPods are such a runaway market share success

I may well re-import my stuff as Apple Lossless...

As an aside, if you want to print CD jewel cases for when you burn CD's, select a playlist and choose print and you get some nice options for layouts etc.

Yes you can convert it from one to another, obviously it makes sense not to convert from a low quality version to a higher one as it won't "put the quality back in".

If you have them as Apple lossless and then decide you want them in mp3 (because you buy a non iPod mp3 player, I fail to see why you would, but lets say you did) you just go into preferences and set the format to mp3.  Then find the tracks you want to convert, highlight them, go to the Advanced menu and choose "convert track to mp3".

My once dead I-Pod re-incarnated itself this morning, after me pronanouncing it's time of death some weeks ago.

It's clearly not 100% still as I've had to reset it twice today but it worked in my car on the way to work and it connected OK with my newly downloaded iTunes 7 today.

Seems to have a mind of it's own, but my new Video pod is on order anyway......

Well, they lowered the price of iPods in their announcement.

The family now looks like this:

1GB Shuffle (no screen) - £55
2GB Nano - £99
4GB Nano - £129
8GB Nano - £169
30GB iPod Video - £189
80GB iPod Video - £259

So they cover most pockets.

I'm selling my old 20GB 3rd gen one (mono screen) with remote and dock and new (unused) headphones.
The battery life is down to about 4 hours but a new battery is only £15 on EBay.
I'll be asking £80 on EBay for it.
