RIP Chrysler PT Cruiser.
« on: January 15, 2009, 07:42:02 pm »
Ye old Chrysler PT Cruiser is going the way of the dodo this summer according to Chrysler LLC President Tom LaSorda.

Can't say I ever really "got" the PT idea, but at least it was different than the average Euro box

Sales of the PT dropped by 49% last year, with only 50,910 vehicles leaving dealer lots. That's down from the PT's peak when Chrysler was able to offload 144,717 models in 2001.
The PT's demise doesn't come as a surprise, particularly considering that Chrysler's owner, Cerberus Capital Management, has slashed six other models from the automaker's lineup since it took control in August 2007.
Gotta wonder what will be left to survive

They're different - I'll give them that - but no great loss.

Not a huge fan but I would consider one as a daily.....just so I could park it on the show field next to Deans caddy(s)

Personally I really like them.

I've never driven one or ridden in one, but I like the look of them, nicely retro (I love 30s car styling) and instantly recognisable unlike other boring euroboxes.

When I looked a couple of years ago they were pretty pricey s/hand for what they were.

Obviously some (a lot?) of the sales drop was due to the general economy, but a 9 year run without a refresh is very good these days...

I seem to remember part of the insides are painted metal???

Less dodgy Chrysler plastics that way...

I love the styling of them. When I totalled my Hyundai Coupe I considered a PT Cruiser as my daily driver. Went and drove one - the older petrol 2.0 one. Very nice and comfy inside - almost like sitting in an armchair. The engine and gearbox were however AGRICULTURAL!!! Awful. The worst car I've ever driven. Even a Daewoo Matiz courtesy car I had once was better.

It was really sluggish and underpowered. It felt like I was driving a tractor.

Apparently the newer 2.2 which replaced it in about 2002 is a lot better. Big shame though - if I'd never driven it I'd have bought one straight off.

Which just goes to show you should always drive the bladdy car...

I wouldn't want an auto box on a 4 pot, the engines are too gutless to drag the car up through the gears...

They desperately need a small turbo, IMO, to up the "ompth".

looks like painted metal.. its painted plastic.

to ride in? yeah, they are ok, the good thing about them is you dont pay any penalty for the retro styling, they are no worse, or different really, than any other car. curiously, the plastics in the PT cruiser are noticably better than newer chryslers, notably the neon and 300C

i'd actualy go as far as saying they are one of the better chrysler products, and about as American as milka chocolate - they (euro spec models anyway) are made in Austria!
