This means I have to follow the tradition of ever since GTA3 i've either bought a new GFX card or a new PC to play the new game nicely (sad i know but true...) as a result i've started looking at new PC's to run my favourite game so it looks cool & Pimpy

Now, I can't buy right away because of a ongoing cashflow problem so atm its purely hypothetical but what do you guys reckon to this from www.overclockers.co.uk...

LOL well take a look at the requirements for the game first off, as TBH i think your current machine will run it perfectly fine....

Obviously if ya want to spend lots of dosh and upgrade then that spec is MORE than enough i would imagine!!

There is another option... thats to build a DDR3 system based on a VERY good motherboard that for now will be wicked and leave more options open for the future... this of course means re-using all the other ancillary parts thats are in my current machine, including the HDD which means a LOT of DVD backups for the switchover. Its more hassle but will give me a better platform to upgrade with in the future.

And its a bit cheaper. (and i could probably go for a slightly cheaper processor too if needed)

Question... any reason that This PSU won't cope with that setup???

hmm looks a good option - bit cheaper and still super high spec!!

Yeah PSU should be ok - main thing is the connectors for mobo - should be the same...

Can games on Winblows actually use all those cores?

I know on the Macs (which have been multi processor for donkeys) that the iLife applications (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie etc) could only use 2 cores (maybe 4 nowadays) and to see any increase in performance with 4 (and now

cores you had to be running the Pro apps like Final Cut Pro etc.

And I know that Windows apps and games were even worse when it came to multi processing as such systems were so thin on the ground nobody bothered to write code for them. Has that changed?

I'm just asking as you could save a lot on your budget if you just had a single quad core processor. (as you save not only on the processor but also the motherboard).

Alan wake will be the only game to use multi cores.

Im flogging my PC as Ive now got a PS3 and use it for nothing but the internetweb. So im going to get a lappy.

Core 1 - Anti Virus software
Core 2 - Anti adware and malware
Core 3 - All the crap that goes in the system tray
Core 4 - Windows itself

Hmm, maybe best to get the 8 core then...

Well this might end up happening sooner than expected, not because of GTA but because i'm sick & tired of the sodding motherboard in my current machine f****** up and just beeping at me instead of booting up. I'm posting from my brothers machine today because of this... Not Happy!!

Pc People out there... which one of these 2 processors would you go for & why.... 1st one straight up out of the box... 2nd one Overclocked but cheaper.

actually ignore the above question, i'll be going for the non- overclocked one i reckon because I want something I know is stable. even though it costs a fair bit more!

tbh, there still isnt that much more you can do with dual core atm, never mind quad...

I've had my dual core for a year now, and nothing has come close to even nearly taxing it

I'd also advise against SLI ing up the cards

just get the mutts nutts in a single card solution.. then again, in the future, if warrented, you just pop in another.... or replace it with the amd xxxgtfxomg or the nvidia jesusHwtfbbq (whatever the next gen cards will be called)

I went for AMD when I upgraded. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ AM2 3.0GHz is only £100. I've been running it overclocked at 3.16GHz since I bought it, with no problems. Intel always seem like a masive waist of money.

FYI - I went for the 8800 GTS 320 (not sure if that was a great choice, but for only £180 its fantastic value).

I haven't found a game that I cannot run smoothly on full graphics.

My main reason for picking Intel (from that site anyway) is that there aren't any socket AM2 motherboards listed that use DDR3 Ram...

The intention is to jump straight to that and skip the DDR2 generation of Motherboards for a bit extra futureproofing...

tbh, atm, your most important component to buy will be the motherboard.

ensure it can take sli x 16 ... some only do it x8, then pop in a average ( ie cheap) dual core awesomeness e6600/e6700 would do for the moment, then plonk in the faster ( and cheaper ) cpu later

My system as it stands, is 1 year old, and consists of

1 x Intel core2duo E6600
1 x Asus pn5-e-sli Mobo
1 x Bfg nvidia 8800gts ( 640Mb)
4Gb of matched ram
Extreme Music XFI soundcard
random HD
and a slightly generic modular psu...
and the Asus mw226 22" widescreen monitor
I doubt mine would even cost £600 if it were to be built nowadays possibly £700 with the monitor...

All i need to do for my next upgrade, is either change out the cpu, or change out the gfx, but, atm, I dont think there will be a need within the next year...
