LPG conversion?
« on: March 26, 2007, 03:37:44 pm »
Anyone have any experience or can recommend where I can look at getting an LPG conversion.

I'm seriously thinking of promoting my Camaro z/28 upto daily driver. It's comfy, nice to drive has all the goodies, is fast and fun.

Downside is I do 110 miles a day usually (probably nearer to 600 a week) so 24MPG on regualr 95RON is a bit too pricey for me.

However with LPG @ 45-48p per litre it become a more realistic proposition.

Also the higher octane of the LPG will be ideally suited for when I add the supercharger

It does use more against fuel but obviously it is cheaper, its ideal on motorways.

at 24mpg on unleaded, i'd expect 20 - 21 on LPG, so yes, its dramaticly cheaper.

Alternative automotive fuels in woburn sands are excelent, they did the (admitedly state of the art) conversion on dads tahoe, you do pay for top notch kit (£2700 for the prins injection system) but there is NO power loss at all,  its impossible to tell what fuel the car is running on, except for the cost.

i'd expect the Z28 to be a bitch of a job, so i'd steer way clear of anyone who claims that they can do a top notch job for £1500, and avoid anaything that is not sequential injection..

also, the vehicle needs to be running spot on for LPG - we had issues with a slight stiumble and miss on light throttle, and simply couldn't pinpoint it, turned out the inlet manifold was cracked in 3 places!

Well if I go LPG I'd ideally like to replace the fuel tank so as not to loose any space inside.

And yeah I know MPG will likely drop but hopfully only by 1-2mpg. So with LPG at about half the price it still means a potential 40-45mpg+ in termsof running costs.

cant do that.....

the prins systems start the car on petrol, then as the temperature is high enough, it switches over to gas.

systems that replace the petrol tank are generaly rubbish, as the LPG vaporiser will be prone to freezing in cold weather, as it depends on hot engine coolant circulating around it to prevent this.. (hence the reason it waits untill a suitable temp is achived..)

if the vaporiser freezes, the car stalls...

There's masses of space inside the two rear wings, and the spare wheel is useless anyway...

N'ah, there's not that much space, there . . .

I say lose the boot . . . It's useless anyway.

Yeah, t-tops would probably be safer in the boot.

Hmm, assuming LPG is (for arguments sake) 50p per litre cheaper. Which is £2.25 per gallon saving.

At an install cost of, say, £2250, you'd have to use 1000 gallons to save enough to cover the install.
At PhilO's suggestion of 20mpg on LPG, that would be 20,000 miles driving to break even.

A few arbitrary numbers in there, but it's a reasonable start.

umm interesting.

But it's not just the overal cost but the weekly/monthly budget. Half the weekly running costs makes it easier per pay packet.

Plus if I do go this route and the fact I will be doing 600 miles a week then in less than a year I'd have made my money back.

Yes I have T-tops so don't really want to lose the boot space where they sit.

Will have to have a think
