I shouldn't have been able to, but I have broken my 5" vice :(

Looks like a cheap casting though, check out the imperfections and air in the metal.

You wouldn't be able to break my "Record" vice like that !!!

Best place - believe it or not - to get a vice is the car boot . . . Well-used, decent quality, old skool vice that some guy's had for years for next to nothing.

nah not unbreakable...too much cast stuff..

There WAS one next to a barn holding the door shut that I would see when I went for a run. It's been there for years. I've always thought about asking if I could buy it, but thought against it as I already had a vice. Now it's broken, that other vice has been moved (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

I've been doing a lot recently that I've needed a vice for, so I stepped up the search for a replacement.

Following advice, I started looking for a Record vice. So, I setup an eBay 'saved search' for any Record vice within a certain area and I found this one close to where I work in Cambridge for £50, which I thought was a good price (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/actcool.gif)

I gave it a grease up with some lithium white and got it all fixed to the work bench, although it could do with some more heavy-duty fixings as it is bigger and heavier than the last one. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Not sure how old it is, but it looks well made and still in good condition with only a bit of welding splatter and some chipped paint. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cowboy.gif)

You can't go wrong with Record vices, although the modern ones may be a bit suspect. Our work shop is kitted out with them and they're bloody strong/heavy.

Agreed with Arts comment, it might be time to update the worktop, is that laminated MDF? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/shame.gif) Should've have a solid 3/4" thick but of wood there!
