I shouldn't have been able to, but I have broken my 5" vice

Looks like a cheap casting though, check out the imperfections and air in the metal.

You wouldn't be able to break my "Record" vice like that !!!

Best place - believe it or not - to get a vice is the car boot . . . Well-used, decent quality, old skool vice that some guy's had for years for next to nothing.

Or steal one from the Engineering company you've just been made redundant from.

nah not unbreakable...too much cast stuff..
i did similar with a carpentry vice a few years ago

got a sturdy record one now a tenner from an auction..

btw...
that lump hammer looks mighty guilty..like something outta toy story...

There WAS one next to a barn holding the door shut that I would see when I went for a run. It's been there for years. I've always thought about asking if I could buy it, but thought against it as I already had a vice. Now it's broken, that other vice has been moved

I've been doing a lot recently that I've needed a vice for, so I stepped up the search for a replacement.

Following advice, I started looking for a Record vice. So, I setup an eBay 'saved search' for any Record vice within a certain area and I found this one close to where I work in Cambridge for £50, which I thought was a good price

I gave it a grease up with some lithium white and got it all fixed to the work bench, although it could do with some more heavy-duty fixings as it is bigger and heavier than the last one.

Not sure how old it is, but it looks well made and still in good condition with only a bit of welding splatter and some chipped paint.

You can't go wrong with Record vices, although the modern ones may be a bit suspect. Our work shop is kitted out with them and they're bloody strong/heavy.

Agreed with Arts comment, it might be time to update the worktop, is that laminated MDF?

Should've have a solid 3/4" thick but of wood there!
