if the seller is legit, provided you pay for the ticket, they should let you take it for a ticket at your expense, before buying the vehicle. that way, if the car fails in a big way, you spend £40 to save £400 if it passes, you get an MOT'd car for £440

i've bought a lot of cars without ticket, never been bitten yet, but i do inspect them very closely..

failing that, ask nathan if he'd come with you when you look at it and cast an eye over it for you,  he is a damned good MOT tester.
