Unfortunately, there's not much you can do with the iphones new G.P.S. According to Apple, the iPhone's G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example.
Instead, all it can do at this point is track your position as you drive along, representing you as a blue dot sliding along the roads of the map. Even then, the metal of a car or the buildings of Manhattan are often enough to block the iPhone's view of the sky, leaving it just as confused as you are.

I think you mean the iPhone cant.

The HTC Touch range (and i believe Nokia's N9x range) have fully functioning GPS (or in the Diamonds case the new A-GPS) as well as being a fully functional phone/pda.  they also manage to put decent cameras, screen, wifi, bluetooth, mp3 player, web browser, etc, etc, etc... and have done for the last 2 or more years.

Unfortunatly crapple just don't seem to be able to make a good phone... actually scratch that, I'm sure crapple are perfectly 'capable' but they know dumb-arses will buy a crap phone if its got apple written on it. then they can slowly add the technology that other phones have had for years, and make more money every time.  good business sense, if you've got stupid buyers why not exploit them for all you can.

That iPhone thing is just another F*cking fashion accessory.

I own an iPod - the only apple product worth having - and even I'll admit that there's better, cheaper versions out there.

GPS on a phone I've never got, either.  But what do I know, I'm a F*cking Technophobe.

Dammit.  Must log Sammy off.

Luckely the HTC's are windows mobile based, so normal tomtom works for free

orange give unlimited free data connection on tariffs over £30 now so can use internet where ever you may be (in the UK) for free

Got my HTC Diamond now, tis fantastic! and looks amazing too.  all that stuff and its smaller than my Sony Ericsson K850 by quite a bit!

What has the size of the GPS antenna got to do with the fact that it (as in the included software) doesn't offer turn by turn directions, yet shows your progress on the map anyway???

Anyways, I got my 3G one today and while browsing is certainly quicker on 3G (probably 3x so) and the GPS is ok (slow to find an initial fix but then thats gps, so instead it finds you first using the cell towers and then homes in on gps and then sticks to gps unless it loses the signal due to buildings and switches back to cell towers)

I like it so far, but the first generation felt better made (metal back, and heavier).

Happily the 2G models are going fast on ebay.  A guy I know put his old 8GB one on there for £200 and it sold in 3mins...
Upgradng to the new one will actually save me money in that I will basically get almost all of what I paid for the first one back...

the htc diamond is fantastic. lots of cool features, to many to post here. my only gripe is it is a little laggy (most likely due to the microsoft operating system)

Not fashion victims (well, alright some are), just people fed up with phones that tout features they can't figure out how to use and are just generally clunky.

Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door...

I get more amused by the number of people who are bothered by the fact people are buying it.  The problem is that we live in a very judgemental society and one that favours "belonging".  Some will queue for the hot gadget (be it a phone or a games console) in order to belong, others will loudly deride them for it, hoping to find agreement from others who don't have one, so they have something to belong to as well.

I just think we live in a strange world.

It's not ok to queue for a new phone/games console for hours especially in the rain.

It is ok to queue to get a celebrity to write their name on a book/album/piece of paper, even in the rain.

It's not ok to be a fan of a product you use and find easy/useful/whatever.

It is ok to be such a big fan of your football team that you strip off your shirt and paint your whole body in the team colours and cry when they lose.

It's not (generally) ok to say you don't drink.

It is ok to go out and get completely wasted so much so that you can't talk, throw up all over the pavement, make a complete arse of yourself and then try and fight with the first person you meet.  In fact it's not only ok, you can brag about it.

We live in a really strange world...

I also find it amusing/strange how views change over time.

When I was in my teens it was not cool to play computer games.  That was for saddos who needed to get out more.  Now people of all ages play computer games.
And never mind games, actually talking to your mate using your computer instead of just phoning him/her or nipping round there?  Serious sadville.  But now "normal".
