I want access constantly to them, the backing up isn't an issue as it's just music, I for one am not too fussed if one day I lose it. I simply use it all the time....

Sounds good Andy, although just as complicated (I got confused about 1/3 of the way through!).

I have seen some online that say No HDD. So what is it?!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002U42XD6/ref=asc_df_B002U42XD67301166?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=hydra0b-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B002U42XD6&hvpos=none&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1504448921252824841&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=

I think I might go for the £120 ish one. So, I simply buy one, plug it into my router and set it as my home folder for my i-Tunes?

Only just seen this...

That Synology is a single drive enclosure, basically you buy it and a plain hard drive like you stick in your pc and put it inside it (it just plugs in).  then yes, plug it into your router and enjoy.
I jave a 4 bay (ie takes 4 hard drives and makes them all look like one big one) version of that.  The software features are the same.

If you buy a Synology and have trouble setting it up (it's fairly easy actually as its all web based) let me know and I'll help you out.  Compared to Maplins boxes etc that are cheaper it is a far more advanced thing...

Mine is a 4 bay NAS drive with hybrid RAID (to allow upgrading a single hard drive at a time without having to copy data off onto another drive temporarily etc).  It was £245 excluding the drives, in Tottenham Court Rd.

They do a 2 bay version (£160 I think?) and even a 1 bay version (£120 I think?), but the functionality is the same.  The only difference is the 1 bay version obviously loses all your data if your drive dies, the 2 bay doesn't if you set it to RAID 1 mirroring, and the 4 bay one aside from obviously larger capacity lets you upgrade the disks 1 by 1 with no hassle.

They seem expensive but are well worth the money.  The feature set is amazing.  It is a DNLA server so all the videos I put on there are instantly available to my Samsung SmartTV over the wireless.  It also has a built in file downloader which can also do torrents.  It has an associated app for the iPhone that lets me find a torrent and then send it to the Synology to download the torrent file and auto kick off the download.  By the time I get home form work the torrent is ready and waiting for me, if its a movie I just flick on the tv and select the NAS as a source and watch it.  Simples!

It also acts as Apple TimeCapsule for wireless backups from multiple Macs.

The model numbers start with DS followed by a number that indicates the number of drives (1,2,4 etc) followed by the model year (eg 10,11,12) followed by a J if it is the "cut down" version.  By cut down it has a slower processor and less ram.  Mine is a model year 2010 and is a cut down one.  It still only uses 50% of the ram and the cpu mostly idles but spikes up to 30-40% when doing heavy stuff.  A newer J model would likely have a faster processor than the non cut down version from a year or two ago so I say get a J version, it's plenty.

Software support in terms of OS upgrades is for a in 5 years so my 2010 model is fine until 2015 at least.

I use a Synology NAS.
I point iTunes to a folder on that and the music is stored there.

However, if you start iTunes or attempt to play a song when that drive is unavailable to you, iTunes will reset its library location to your hard drive without telling you so you'll have to know to change it back to point at the NAS...

06 on is known as a WK.
The Commander is the same underneath.

Overland is still top trim iirc with the Quadradrive 2 system.

As with all things SUV it's not quite as good off road as the previous generation Grand, which in turn is not as good as the one prior etc.

If you go for the 3.0L CRD then pull the engine cover off and have a look at the oil lines going to the turbo, they commonly leak and it's £700 - £900 to fix.

Other then that Ive not heard of any other common problems.
1 person I know had the parking sensors pack up, another had a sat nav that wouldn't read a disc and another had a wiring plug corrode behind the front bumper causing the dash to light up like a christmas tree.
But I've only read one instance of each of these.

Tough starting could be an air leak or faulty injector.

Other than that check the usual, especially the 4wd system...

The prior generation had a lot of electrical problems with age, I don't know if the loom in the WK is any better than the POS one Mercedes put in the previous generation...

General Banter / Is Sky TV Actually worth it?
« on: February 05, 2012, 02:04:33 pm »
I have Freeview HD and use that.  for any programmes I cant get I either rent them at £1.79 per episode on AppleTV (which works out way cheaper than a sky sub) or even download them.
However have access to Sky Player on the tv so can watch some stuff over the net using my parents login from their sky account.
I rent movies on AppleTV, again cheaper than a sky sub.

Never heard of them, so no...

I'd go with something like JBL (bit bassy) or Inifnity (not very bassy but very clear vocals, good if you have a sub somewhere) which you can probably pick up for around 30 or 40 quid a paid?

I'm not saying every engine builder in the US is a god.

But the ones here want to be shit hot for what they charge...

While I don't want to cause offence, I do feel the need to point out that in my recollection your engine wasn't a shining example of reliability and good running for what you spent on it?  But then I guess I don't hear the bad side about the US builders as I don't follow any of their builds as closely as obviously I heard about yours so maybe that's the norm at that power level.

Just caught up with this thread...

Personally I wouldn't let a UK engine builder anywhere near a proper chevy build.  I totally agree with your comments re his attitude towards the LT1.  Plenty of fast cars running them in the US.

When I had the IROC I intended to import a built engine for the US.  They're more experienced, they're cheaper, and they have a better attitude on the whole.

If they have any free time on their hands you'd think in this economy they'd take almost anything on just to keep busy...

It's why I hate dealing with UK companies, there's no "can do" attitude.
