Questions and Queries / ODB1 Question ?

The GMC has OBD1 diagonostics , had the service engine light come on in Blackpool
Ran like shite ( limp home mode ? ) for a couple of miles until I turned it off , waited and then restarted it and the light went out.
It's proving hard to find a reasonably price OBD1 reader , loads cheap OBD2's but 1's are pricey ( £125 ).
My question is if I go the old paper clip route , will it still show what the fault was even though the light has re-set ?

The CD in the GMC won't play CD's
I've tried several bought CD's , a recorded one and a MP3 one , just keeps coming up with format error ?
Do the Jap's use a different format to us ??
