Potential el-cheapo PC upgrades
« on: December 13, 2006, 12:50:32 am »
Ian / Vicky, can you see any reason why these 2 wouldn't be fully compatible?

Processor: (there's loads of these 3200+ skt 462 cpus on ebay, this one is linked because it has the most information)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280058229827&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=018

and mainboard:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130058055092&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003

the new mainboard is because my current one doesn't specifically say that it supports the 3200 cpu.

everything else is fine as it is... (btw I won the RAM chip, so i'll have 2GB)

both look good parts mate, but they won't work together!!

The CPU has FSB (Bus speed) of 400 and the mobo only supports to a 333 FSB so won't work

Also what spec is the ram you got?

hmm ok, might have to see if I can get a Athlon XP3000 then as thats a 333FSB

The RAM is PC2700 DDR 333mhz Kingston which is exactly the same as the 1GB chip I already have (why I got it)

Ian, would this mainboard support the 3200?

http://www.techfever.co.uk/products.asp?partno=9631&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=froogle

edit: it does support the 3200cpu and also the 2700RAM that I already have, think i'll get that one

OK fair enough but  would be wary of mixing FSB's mate - as if yer CPU is running at 400 and RAM at 333, there could well me issues cos the CPU running quicker then the ram could handle, and normally you would down throttle the CPU to run @ 333....

Bsaically best thing is to try for a 333 FSB CPU although, if you were planning to upg the ram in the future it may be best to go for 400 but "down grade" to 333......

in that case - the 400 FSB CPU & MOBO is kewl, just see if ya can find out if the mobo has the ability to down-speed the FSB

I'll read the manual when it arrives LOL

it says it supports slower FSB speeds.

Will do m8, hopefully I should be able to follow the instructions for the Mobo to get it physically setup so we should be ready to just do the onscreen stuff when you arrive.

Also how can I backup my internet favourites?  i'd hate to have to write them all down!

FOR IE = What you have is under your profile direcory under C:\ Documents and settings (i.e. C:\Documents and settings\FUBAR) will be a "favourites" directory - copy this whole folder and voila done!

FOR FIREFOX = into firefox, Bookmarks -> Manage -> File -> Export

LOL ok - one thing to remember though - is you need to configure the new install of outlook BEFORE putting you mail files in the right place, otherwise it wipes them - trust me i did it once!! (but only the once tho!)

Oh and in other good news it seems when my PC was rehoused into its flamed case I DID remember to stick the windows CD Key sticker to the back of it!! Phew!!  If I hadn't the whole lot would be on hold as I can't afford to buy a new copy!
