I recommend some pads and paper for the initial sessions, and maybe some offcuts of wood and a jigsaw to do some mock ups??
I have the Same concerns m8. The 1st time this became really aparant was when me & phil dropped the trailer off at the barn, he Jumped up on it & said something like "Soon we'll be standing here Cooking Burgers" to which my reply was "Na m8, you're facing the wrong way..." deano - whadda you reckon?
50x25x2.5+ RHS = 2.72 kg/m
60x40x2.5+ RHS = 3.71 kg/m.
That's why 60x40 is so much dearer . . . Also 50x25 (2"x1") is more popular, so stock holders will carry larger stocks of them . . .
50x25 would be fine . . . . My only concern is the 2.5mm(+) wall thickness . . . . Typically 3mm(+) or 3.2mm(+) are more suitable for welding and are still both lighter sections compared with 60x40x2.5.

Next weekend could be a possibility . . . . .

Also we decided that following Art's recommendation for access to the Rear (Main) storage Locker we would hinge the entire of the Rear surface of the Trailer so that it folds down.
Also the Tent Poles fit in Cross-ways so the 2 Front lockers will both be self contained.

up to you guys but hamerite always runs on large panels, just my 2 cents, you could go with ali diamond and if it looks to much get it sprayed for the next event. The whole thing has to look right otherwise it will make the MKB look like a bunch of rednecks

we could use the 3mm steel plate mate, or some mild steel sheet
Quoting: 55starchief
Just spoke to richard at the bodyshop, if we went with a solid colour to paint the trailer we would be looking £100-150 cash if we went with a metalic a little more
So basically that works out about £200 cheaper than even just the 2mm Aly Checker Plate...

Oh yeah I appreciate that, i've no objections to whats involved in putting this thing together, I'm just thinking that a wooden floor in the storage areas, something like that Block board stuff? properly sealed up underneath would be just as effective as a steel floor. Ok have been doing a little research and i reckon that my router andsome TCT bits will be able to bevel the edge on the checker plate. I think this would look better than edging strip
If it goes perfect - yes.
But it's unlikely to go perfect, TBH - but it doesn't harm giving it a go . . .
Thought i would try on an off cut mate and see what result we get first

My router is variable from 8k-22k

8k-22k
Not that fast !
Try the lowest setting and keep fingers crossed.
We milled Ally in the 100's of revs - not 1,000's . . .
Hmmm i guess if i used the 110v output on the benny i could half the speed
Quoting: 55starchief
Well i guess we have nothing to loos if its a scrap piece, will need some coolant to stop the bit over heating
Coolant ? - With an electric router ? (http://www.aaci-beds.co.uk/forum/smileys/confused.gif)

Thought philo was gonna get that this week? as for welding we would need to drag it to my folks place to weld that.
When do we want the steel sheet delivered? or does some one else want to sorce this PHILO?
wil be deliverd tomorrow..
6 meters of 40x40 x 5mm angle steel..
was gonna cost £9.90, but my boss refused to take money for it, so is donating it! (http://www.aaci-beds.co.uk/forum/smileys/up.gif)
Quoting: philoldsmobile
gonna be an absolute bugger to haul though, plus i dont think sheets come that big..
sheets are 2mx1m which would be almost the perfect size for the sides and with a plasma we could soon cut sheet to fit the other sections

ya just wanna play wiff a plasma cutter[ so do i]
Quoting: philoldsmobile

Will call the steel stockist tomorrow. What you think 4/5 sheets of 1.2mm?
Quoting: philoldsmobile
thats the kiddy...
£44 is a bit steep for an accessory though, perhaps later in the season..
Thats the cheapest i found. Might find cheaper at a breakers or ebay mate. You need the rears as the fronts are un equal in length
Quoting: FUBAR
Thats a lot cheaper than previously quoted isn't it...?
yeah not sure where philo got his prices from. The checker in 3mm steel was £28+VAT
Quoting: art b
can ya get steel fubar plate?
it lays flat

Hello all! I know this project has zip to do with me but I was thinking about your - what colour to paint the BBQ - dilema.
You may want to consider a bog standard black cos with the filth from the roads when transporting together with the burnt charcoal from the actuall BBQ you may find that any other colour could be, well, discoloured! Black may hide the dirt?
Just an idea - not want to poke my nose in.......
not poking your nose in at all Debs, all input is welcome!
black actualy shows dirt more than any other colour, i believe we decided on a dark red (maroon) type colour - like ryans car, but not metallic.
the tank itself will depend on what is available in heat resistant, but black seems likely for that...

Quoting: Roadkill
Have we added the extra support to the lower sections as we discussed ?
Not yet mate, the sheet is 50mm to short at the moment so we figured we would checker a 100mm strip along the bottom to add rigidity aswell as some protection

Are we gonna address this before sheeting? Or was it just the angle I looked at it ?
Might just be the angle mate

ok then i will get a price on a sheet of the thinest available and get it cut into 4" strips, philo can bend them up for corner protection and whats left can be used along the bottom and for other trim areas
Quoting: Roadkill
Why are we not adding the extra steel
Time mate, also no welder avialbale and no steel. The chassis had to be finished at the weekend.
We still need to fold corner protectors as the sheeting isnt good enough to leave raw edged. \we had to fudge one side to get it square
Quoting: philoldsmobile
keep the thickness as thin as poss if its steel, preferably under 2mm
it will be 3mm o/p mate so shouldnt be a problem. Need to call and see the cost of getting it cut first

They look just the ticket...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

The crucial thing with these is that the Pivots all need to be in line! that was the problem with the last lot more than the heat, they weren't lined up.
Indeed... The holes that are there at the moment could all do with filling with weld and grinding back ready for a fresh set...

How about we just weld on some box section and fix a wooden handle across it...
that would also work... not pimpy though (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)
Quoting: Titsy
If they are upto the job then the plus side would be that we can remove the lid when cooking should we want to.
That was my thinking, they are the proper heavy duty 5 bar gate hinges not the flimsy garden gate ones. Once welded on i cant see how they would warp
Quoting: FUBAR
One things about the siting of the old handle... when you opened the hot lid you had to arch your wrist up because the handle dissappeared behind the lid... is there a way to drop the handle down below the bottom edge of the lid section (when closed) so that it is above the lid when open? thus preventing this problem...
You could do what I said with the box section but weld it at a tangent to the lid so that it hangs below the bottom edge of the lid... that way you can keep hold of it the whole way up...
Quoting: Titsy
You could do what I said with the box section but weld it at a tangent to the lid so that it hangs below the bottom edge of the lid... that way you can keep hold of it the whole way up...
Yeah that would work (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
Quoting: Titsy
It wasn't my thinking though, I was refering to the ones FUBAR found with the R-Clip...
with the HD gate hinges you could remove the lid when its hot unlike the 'R' clips which would get hot.
Quoting: FUBAR
Also withe the new hinges the Lid WILL need a Backstop to stop stressing the hinges...
Again another reason for the gate hinge as it would fold back on its self. The rod it hinges on is quite thick almost 1/2" so should be man enough. If you have ever lifted a 5 bar gate its not light at all, i would say almost as heavy as the damn tank
Quoting: 55starchief
Again another reason for the gate hinge as it would fold back on its self.
You would still need to fit something to stop the lid as it would fold all the way back over the BBQ with the gate hinges stopping you from closing it without bursting into flames...

definatley think we need to re cut the top part of the opening to make it level, weld up & gtrind back existing holes, then drill & fit which ever hinges...do that first then sort handle out....
Or...
You mount the hinges to a hefty strip of steel or stainless (pref steel) on both sides of the hinge... that way the huge strip can be seam welded to the tank all along and not only does it tidy up the gap along the top edge but it gives you a solid base to be bolting the stainless hinges too.
this also ensures that the hinges will be 100% lined up even before mounting preventing the stress related death that the last ones suffered from.

Ai true, although i think that then you are gunna put all the stress on teh welds, which are (if they go) a bigger job than some new hinges to replace??
Quoting: FUBAR
if you want to be really artistic you could design in a flame design stretching over the top of the tank from the hinges disguising in design the fact that the sawsal wobbly cut had to be covered...
Quoting: 55starchief
Well i dont care what you guys do as long as it gets done. The top edge also needs capping and the side panels on the front need the corner trim. Also need to find some rivets with a large diameter head 10mm to match with the others used to fix the trim on
Yeah def needs doing before the AACUK Spring nats!!
Quoting: Jamieg285
Personally, I'd do a custom hinge.
One long bar, 1/2 diameter or thicker, and then some tube, a with a bit bigger hole down the middle, i.e. allows the bar to move, but not to snug or sloppy.
Cut the tube into sections. With the pieces of tube on the bar, and the bar in the final position, weld alternate tubes to the lid and the others to the body - add strips of metal to extend/fit as required.
Make sure the bar is at least 2 inches wider than the outermost bits of tube, and drill throuh to be able to insert R-clips to hold it in place/allow easy removal of the bar to remove the door.
The single bar will remove the need to allign multiple hinges.
Thats basicaly what a 5 bar ghate hinge is, hence the reason for sugesting that. But what do i know (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)
Quoting: Jamieg285
Yes, but they require multiple hinges... and aligning properly.
i was going to recomend a pair which would be more than enough for that lid. But if others want to use other soloutions i dont mind

The Part: WELD ON HINGE WITH 3 LEAVES 14 X 147mm ART 8130
They're Stainless & basically what I plan to do is comission PhilO to weld the 3 hinges to 2 strips of Stainless (3mm think?, either way sturdy, but not too think as to look stupid) which is then in turn welded or bolted to each side of the hinged join on the outside of the Tank.
This will essentially then create a entirely new (DEAD STRAIGHT) hinged joint superceeding the old wonky cut underneath. It will also hide it and the old hinge holes quite nicely too.
I see no reason why this won't work perfectly.
Quoting: ianjpage
Is that for the food to be cooked on cos this is the the coals to sit on...

A nicer looking Handle arrangement (again not urgent)
Conrods and some bar...
Ooh I like...
thst given me an idea... you probably wouldn;t even need anything else as you could use the big ends as loop handles.
Angle them down so you can reach them over the lid when open. & just weld them on.
I know they'd be metal handles but if you think about it the lid is only ever open when the BBQ is hot, and it was the Heating / furnace idea that got the lid so hot before that it killed the original mountings.
On the hinge note, A2A4 haven't come back to me so i'll order the giant hinge from juststainless.co.uk i reckon, its not cheap I know but it will look good (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Is the current hinge bolted or welded on ?
Just thinking that you won't be able to weld the stainless to the mild steel tank (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

if you use a wooden bar it wont get nearly as hot so you'll still be able to touch it
thats what we have at the moment, for that very reason. I prefer Steve's idea to mine so that would work well.

I was thinking more of removing the bearing caps and bolting the big ends onto the lid using the fasteners
That's what I'd guessed you meant.
What's the overall length, centre-to-centre . . . we don't want them too long ?

EDIT: Sorry for the typical newbie remark!
You're forgiven. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)
Ian - Re the bracing.
Looking at the frame as a rectangle, longest sides top and bottom, you want the bracing (I'd suggest a slightly smaller sized angle to sit within) to start mid point on the smaller sides (roughly as you've drawn) and maintain a 45* angle to the longer sides . . .
This will leave a fair gap between the ends of the bracing on the long sides so, dependant on actual measurement, it may be prudent to add a further piece to span the gap (mid point of the long side - parallel to the short side.
Although I think this would be overkill.
I'd recommend around 30x30 - to - 40x40 for the mainframe and 25x25 - to - 30x30 for the bracing respectively.

phil can get 30x30, 40x40 or 50x50 - so would 50x50 for the main and 30x30 for the bracing be enough to withstand the heat??

Basically we need a smaller version of the contact plate that the 3rd gen camaro uses to power the 3rd brake light when the boot is closed.

A few other things that spring to mind that need doing:
- New Brakes!!
- New Jockey Wheel
- Replacement Charcoal Grill (Idea in on this using solid Mild Steel Bar)
- Replacement Cooking Grill (I have an idea for this but its probably not cheap as it involves making it from Solid Stainless Bar...) this is not urgent at all TBH
(again not urgent)
- Purchase of Shiny Stainless things like hinges will be happening soon.
- New Brakes - Still very urgent
- New Jockey wheel - it still needs one.
- Replacement Charcoal Grill - Work in Progress I believe (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
- Replacement Cooking Grill - not urgent
- A nicer looking Handle arrangement - Now Urgent as we cut the old one off (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif). I have found (in B&Q of all places) something that will work for this, its basically a 52mm wooden staircase handrailing and associated end fittings... trouble is the fittings are £20 each but they can be appropriately shaped to fit the curve of the tank, and a length of pine 'rod' to go in the middle is £18 (Oak one is £50!!! sod that!) so its not cheap, but its chunky (possibly too chunky?) and will not break. anyone got any other ideas?
And... anyone want to volunteer to buy some bits for any of the above?
