I don't think there's a problem with anything else in the case, the CPU heatsink is always cool, as far down as I can get my finger to tell anyway, and I checked the RAM last night too and that felt cool, right after it crashed out too, whereas the GPU heatsink felt quite warm, not burning but warm, and that was on the outside surface...

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong (I usually am) but if your CPU heatsink is cold when its running, I'd assume that it is not making good contact with the processor...

just a thought

Not exactly it means the heatsink is working correctly, if there was not enough airflow then i would expect it to be warm. You would need to get a temp probe on it to see what the temp is really

Well, if you buy a new card, I'd be interested in taking the old one off your hands.

And yes, a cold heat sink *could* be due to it not making contact, or that it is cooling really well. Certainly no harm in checking either way.

Should be easy, all motherboards have temp sensors under the processor.

Fubar - does your motherboard make any beeps before it crashes (should do this if the temp sensor detects CPU over temp) this will only work if sensor is touching cpu though - i've had one that wasn't.

That will only tell you the CPU temp, what you need is a laser temp gun like jamie had this will tell you the temp any place you point it on the heatsink. If its working there should be a temp decrease as you go up the fins

Yes... so if the heat sink is not making good contact the CPU temp will be alot higher that it should be

i've never seen that get above 35deg... the CPU heatsink is fine.

PhilO has already said he'd like it but if he changes his mind then no probs.  (you'd have to test it first before handing over any cash to make sure the problem doesn't migrate machines...

okay, just a thought....

spoken so some guys at work, they all agree (with losty) that if it was the gfx card over heating you'd get artifacts appearing on the screen before it finaly gives up. (i wouldn't know though, never had the problem)

I can't find your origional post, so dont know what the symptoms(sp) are...

After last nights "Testing"  Nothing is overheating at all, the card went up 1 deg and the CPU is fine too...

Basically its crashing totally randomly in all 3D games that i've tried, both Battlefields, UT2k4, Sim bloody City 4!!  (Not tried Flat Out 2 yet)

Sometimes it takes 1 second, sometimes 5-15 mins, sometimes a couple of hours (thats the exception rather than the norm...)

what does it do when it crahses (ie blue screen of death, or just hang?)

my work mate says he had a similar problem.  with his, when the PC was sucking as much power as it could (ie during 3D games) the PSU got too hot.  He looked into it and followed the following rule:

no more that 3 drives powered from one 'channel' and gfx card on its own 'channel'.  the channels, and the power they can handle, should be on the side of your PSU.

off topic: how many post do i need to get out of newbi land?

Yep done, (and on a loaned PSU from Losty)
- 2 Drives & Fan Controller Powered from 1 Rail, (all fans on low as thats all it needs)

- GFX Card and Floppy Drive () on the other rail.

- Hard Drive on Separate SATA Rail.

- Cathodes Unplugged.

90% of the time its a crash-to-desktop
10% of the time its a automatic reboot
0% is B.S.O.D.

This to me indicates that the actual computer operations are fine because windows keeps running perfectly, doesn't shut or crash any other open programs down either

Does it ever crash when *not* playing games?

So far it sounds like it only goes wrong when it's playing games (ie working the graphics card and CPU fairly hard). And that implies something is overheating or not being fed enough power.

Try running a game at the lowest possible resolution and settings and see if it lasts any longer.

It lasted over 2 hours last night without changing a thing, thats considerably longer than the 5 mins etc that it sometimes lasts.

time for shiney new gfx card, and then send it back to them instantly if the symptoms are still there ( 7 day cooling off period... distance selling malarky) but would suggest that you DON'T buy it off overclockers just incase... as I have heard that they suck ass big style for giving you an RMA
