Hmm, when u say lower power what is it vs what is in the machine

Dunno.  Does 350 mean something ? Think my one's 550 ?

A mains voltage spike destroying two HDD's is a little unlikely (if not very unlucky).  I have never had surge protection and, like Chris, had no problems when living at yours (or anywhere else in the world for that matter).

Would be interesting to see if the HDD can be read in another PC.  though that might have to wait till Friday.

get a linux live CD, and boot up from it

it gives you a full operating system, and if its not the hard drive thats fooked, then it will give you the ability to back up your stuff as it would let you transfer files onto your external usb drive

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-4.2.5.iso

download and burn to cd either of the above image files

the damn small linux is around 50Mb

Ubuntu saved me on saturday when i accidently deleted some important start up files from windows....

booted from the cd, and plugged in the usb drive with the files on it, and plonked them back in the windows/system32 folder and job was a good un!

In the video, The Street says that on average Mac users surveyed were discovered to be “self centered, arrogant, conceited” and truly "snobs". The site says this has many real commercial ramifications, so all jokes aside, the "snob"-factor warrants serious attention.

So I'm not allowed to openly recognise that Macs are better?

Mac users, apparently concerned with self-image, were found to buy tooth-whitening products at a far greater rate than PC users. Mac users are also more likely to visit Starbucks, buy organic food, and own hybrid cars. Furthermore, Mac users buy on average 5 new pairs of sneakers a year, well above the average for non-users.

Tooth whitening - No
Starbucks - Yes
Organic - No.  Although I do care about what's in my food
Hybrid cars - Obviously not although I've nothing against them.

Mac users prefer notebooks to desktops, station wagons to SUVs

Generally prefer a notebook but sometimes you need the power and screen real estate of a Desktop.
Not keen on the driving experience of SUVs, although they are cooler than station wagons imho.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mac users prefer "green" products, even at a higher cost. Perhaps more surprisingly, Mac users are quite law abiding and are more likely than not to pay for music -- perhaps more due to the popularity of iTunes than their moral inclinations. Mac users are more satisfied with their purchase than PC users.

Not bothered by green products although I do prefer energy saving devices as long as they don't actually cost more in their lifetime.

I pay for my music, yes thanks to iTunes.  no, not because it's an Apple product but because it's 79p a song which isn't worth worrying about and is fair to both the record company and me imho.

I am indeed satisfied with my computer purchase.  Mac people very rarely whine about their computers yet most PC owners winge about a crash or a blown piece of hardware or a a problem with Windows or whatever.  Never met a PC user who loves their PC.

Interestingly, people surveyed with an "open personality" were found to be 60% more likely to buy a Mac. Some of the more esoteric observations on Mac users character are flattering, others aren't. Mac users were found to be more liberal, socially and politically. Mac users are also less modest and more assured of their own superiority.

Open personality - no
Liberal - No

I just fail to see why I should spend my money on sub standard products that cause nothing but headaches.  As Macs and PCs cost about the same on a like for like spec basis it's a no brainer for me, hell I'd even pay a little more for a Mac for the easy life.
Although you can run Windows on Macs now I'm still not convinced they're right for most gamers though as the graphics cards are never the high end models.

hard shut down? as in complete power off and no blue screen?

It may be worth trying to remove the cpu - clean it- re-spooge it, and replace?

I had a couple of incident s where my pc has just totally switched off, and ^^ is how i resolved it ( or it was coincidence)

If the cpu is slightly older, it may be that the spooge is too dry and acting as an insulator, therefore, getting hotter, and possibly drawing more power, hence the psu shutting down to protect it ?

Yeap - complete loss of power. happened about 4 times in the end.
Graphic's card was getting too hot to touch - which won't have helped

Swapped back to the old PSU and it seems to be fine now

cpu doesn't seem to be getting too hot

will see how it goes today

The PSU I was using was an old one I had in the loft for 4 years . . . Maybe it got damp or something.

It seems fine with the "old" (actually newer) PSU.

Naw dude, I just thought it was a funny article....

Macs are better, they just need to give you more options to run better graphics cards...  Not really here or there, but I would run a standard PC mouse instead of the mighty mouse, that thing pisses me off!!

Since using my gfs iMac and all the macs at work alot more AND using vista, yes macs make sense..  Give it a bit and hopefully they will allow you to customise the Mac a little more..  Like I said my next pc might be a bit of a hybrid..........
1968 VW T2 Bay Bus (currently being restored and upgraded)
1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ (modern classic daily driver)
