Title: Painting Calipers? FB?
Post by: Cunning Plan on August 06, 2011, 09:30:04 pm
My gf's Fiesta calipers and drums are looking older than they should so I thought I would tidy them up with some nice black paint.

Could someone recommend what to use - obviously it has to be heat-resistant I guess.

Also, I would like to try and get away with not taking them off, so would a paint-on solution be better or a spray?

If a spray, could I just mask everything up and let loose?

What prep work would I need to do? I am assuming that primer wouldn't work (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/huh.gif)

Cheers.

Yes I've done a few (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Preparation is the first point, you'll need to get off all the rust which looks like it's been caused by Alloy Wheel cleaner, nasty corrosive stuff (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/slap.gif)

Secondly and most importantly, you need two pack epoxy brake caliper paint. I tried every other type and it's the only type that lasts longer than few months (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)
It has a tin of coloured pigment which you mix with a hardening resign. This normally goes hard in approx 30 minutes depending on weather conditions. So you'll need all the calipers ready and prepped before you mix the paint.
Halfrauds have stopped selling it because it's about £18 - £20 a can, so you'll have to go to a Chav shop which is always a laugh (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Ah you see that's the problem, if you spent more time on the VDub restoration, firstly you wouldn't have the time for a GF or the money to spend on one (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Cheers for taking the picture Art - that looks OK. I think it's more the colour and the heat resistance I am interested in.

Where did you get the BBQ paint from? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Yah I know and agree, but I don't want to dismantle the brakes and I want to paint them in situ. They are fairly new anyway as the car is only a '58 plate, but because some div has used wheel cleaner as you say, they have lost all their coating. So I just want to blast them again with a bit of paint after cleaning them up (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

All done. Use a Halford's high-temperature paint (supposed to be up to 500deg). It drys a bit matt-coloured, but it's much tidier than before.

How long the paint will last though is another thing (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif) I couldn't find anything else - even sent a question of to Frosts who ignored me (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mad.gif)

Wire-wheeled, sanded to key, Metal-Ready chemical to neutralize rust and put a zinc primer down, then sprayed.
