OK, what does this mean - Cooling system??
« on: April 26, 2006, 06:47:48 pm »
Took my car for a longer run than the usual 2 mile commute today, and noticed that the temp was rising higher than normal (even on longer runs)

With the engine running, I squeezed the top hose and found that there was no pressure.
I stopped the engine, and left it for a few minutes to cool a little, then took the cap off, expecting to find a low level of coolant.  However, the level was up to the cap.
At this point I wondered about the water pump, so with cap off, cranked her up again.  At this point the level dropped a few inches and stayed at a consistent level.  I topped it up with approx 500ml, replaced the cap and left for a few minutes, but still no pressure.

I figure from this that the pump is OK, but cannot work out why there is no pressure.  Is this the sign of a problem, and if so, what should I be checking next?

check the rubber on the cap itself, these perrish loosing both coolant level and pressure..

Stat is jammed shut. You can remove it completely as a short term measure...just need a cork tile or summat to make a gasket up with when ya put it back.

If your gonna remove it try to punch the center out and refit the case. This should stop any airlocks from the lack of resistance

I would say Thermostat, but I think it's already been mentioned.

open and close your windows twice and walk round the car three times anti-clockwise.

Sorted

Or.......it could be your thermostat

OK, thermostat it is then, but I'll check the cap as well.

What temp?  160 or 180 (or other)

I'm guessing 160.

depends i like the lower value as the car gets water to the heater matrix  quicker in the winter

OK, but what's the flip side?

Why go for a higher one?

it  used to be summer and winter mate. The higher value one for the summer, it just holds the water in the block longer before opening it to the radiator.

You can run without a stat all together and this is normal on fast road cars, just replace the stat with a disc of metal with a hole in it to slow down the water flow

As my cars frequently do.

Tend to stay at a lower temp - and take longer to get there . . .

And use more petrol as the Choke / ECU doesn't get instructions to turn off!

if its a cool enough stat, yes.. (and that looses power, BIG time!

i am running a 160 stat, but haven't had any problems with it, 160 seems to be boarderline, some people have problems, some dont..

TPI cars need a new chip for a lower temp stat, because as Ray said, it throws the fueling out by the car thinking its too cold..

it goes back to the age old argument... the car will not over heat in stock form unless there is a problem, unless you specificly need a lower temp stat, dont worry about one..

the van has a 180 stat, but thats because of its life in the city center and airport of palma, majorca..
