Plus, when jacking, you never pick up the whole weight of the car at once.

that's what I said...

This is what I figured as I was going to go for one of the 2 Tonn jacks but when you put the jack in the middle of the car at the front to lift the whole front at the same time, that has to be close to just over 2 tonn?  The engine has to be a tonn alone??

So that 1600kg actually equals a max load more like 2800kg.

Thats interesting  So a 2 tonn jack would be more than adaquate?

No way - a V8's more like 1/2 ton - max - with ancillaries.

I'd have thought so, yeah.

By "Cheapo" I meant dodgy market jobs or unnamed ebay types.

Any large trader will have to have certifications to prove what they sell.

Certain lifting gear will be stamped or have a plate attached . . . Automotive equipment is a little more lose on the rules but follow the same principles.

As a silly piece of info : When doing "professional" lifting - every piece of 'gear has to have a separate cert. sheet . . that includes all eye-bolts and shackles.

It's a real PITA when someone actually wanted to see proof of them all, I can tell you.
