Best place to get RAM
« on: February 07, 2012, 07:34:03 pm »
Hi guys,

finding that size going from Snow Leopard to Lion my MBP is starting to lag a bit in the RAM department, often getting down to less that 500mb free with only a few applications running.

My system as standard has 4GB (2x2GB sticks) but reckons the max I can have is 8GB, so I'm looking at doing this upgrade. Apple's website even gives a step by step guide

So wheres the best place to get it from. Someone told me theres a few shops on Amazon, but would rather go to a proper place and have some come back rather than an amazon shop.

Cheers!

Cheers Ian, will check them out later. Still not 100% sure what I'm looking for but been told to match it up with what's installed just bigger.

Fieldy, if compatible and will run, do you want my old ones?

I always use "crucial memory' for RAM.  Almost exclusively actually, apart from once I bough some apple RAM from a company called Orca... great service from both actually.  I'd go to crucial first, its all they do and they do it very well...

Don't know anything about Mac's, but is it 64bit?

If not, I there's no point going above 4GB. For Windows, a 32bit OS cannot make full use of 4GB, let alone 8GB.

Right, when we do meet up for a beer at one of these Country shows, make sure I buy you one.

Far cheaper than anywhere else and a piss of piss to find on their site! (Crucial)

Jamie - Don't know what the deal is with Macs, just read that its a the reason i'm having issues with my apps, add to that I have about 100GB of hard drive thats being used and I can't find where.

This happens on the iPhones too, it is generally history and statistics built up over time of use.

I turned of the reporting etc to Apple and haven't had the issue since....

Woah! Just booked 2 tickets standing as well at London! Get in!

Still need help with what the 'other' stuff is. A friend suggested that it could be Aperture as if it's anything like Logic it saves any changes made to the hard drive as another file. Anybody know if this is true?

I looked around after that really god awlful but really attractive (until she said she had kids) support act and couldn't see you. We were I think three rows back and had a couple of hilarious guys next to us.

No excuse at this as it should be standing!

Back on topic, yeah I'm running Lion now, and ever since I get the spinning beach ball of doom more often. Hoping this RAM upgrade will help with some Apps like Aperture. Apparently though I should be doing maintenance on my harderive like clearing logs and stuff...
