Fluids and Additives
« on: December 07, 2006, 12:03:57 pm »
OK, I'm planning a bit of a service on the 'maro next week, and need to buy:

Engine Oil + an additive if anyone has any recomendations
ATF + an additive if anyone has any recomendations
Diff Oil + an additive if anyone has any recomendations
Brake Fluid (it's a Dot 3 system)
Fuel System Flush
Possibly Coolant System Flush
Coolant + an additive if anyone has any recomendations

I'd appreciate some recommendations on brands, grades and where's best to buy please guys...

Stay away from additives.
You don't need them,. good brand fluids have any required additives in them anyway.

The problem with the flushes and cleaners is that they wipe away the carbon (or other) deposits that are busy filling the micro holes caused by wear in your engine.

Unless there's something wrong with your enigne and you're clutching at straws, don't do it.

As for the diff oil, just make sure it's the right one (or use an additive) for a posi rear end if that is what you have.

you can use the redline water wetter, works well to help reduce temps

The coolant sits at around 215F (102C ish) at the moment, I would have thought that it would drop a little when I fit the trans cooler, but it might even out with heat exchange in the airflow....

Exactly my thoughts, I'm sure Mobil or Duckhams don't spend millions developing a fluid and miss a vital additive ?

Rear Axle Lubricant is SAE75W-90 synthetic and you need 1.7 pints or 3 litres - GM Part No.89021677 @ £28.43 per litre
The additive is 118ml or 4fl.oz  GM Part No.1052358 £8.44p

Do you mean 1.7 litres or 3 pints? Or has SI gone nuts?

it does work very well, but there is absolutely no reason why it should be needed in a stock road car...

there is nothing special about the driveline in the camaro, so i wouldn't waste money on things you dont need, i found Castrol Magnatec ideal, castrol (or if you prefer hurst hot shift) ATF, and a decent gear oil with the posi additive.. dex cool is the only stuff you should be running in the cooling system (or the penzoil dexcool, as it meets dexcool requirments)

with the coolants ability to absorb heat enhanced (is that how water wetter works?) won't it simply mean the stat spends more time closed? its the stat that governs water temp..
