General Banter / Anyone here got a tortoise?
« on: November 08, 2011, 07:23:57 pm »
just a heads up if you do.....

one of the guys on the alfa forum just lost one - the recent sudden change in weather prompted him to go into hybernaton on a full stomach, the food in there rotted, and poisened him.

if you have anything that hibernates (Ryan? :P ) its best to be careful.

General Banter / Bon voyage and good luck.....
« on: October 30, 2011, 11:13:17 pm »
parents are out of the UK for good now. their ferry for Bilbau left at 10pm, and will arrive 7:30 am tuesday.

They will be living it up in the sun in southern spain by 10 pm tuesday evening, after a 500 mile drive south

Its an odd feeling, I'm so happy for them, its been a dream of theirs for a long time, but its going to be so odd not having them close by.

old people, live the dream.

The Ryugyong hotel, in north Korea. Rumour has it its due to open in 2012 - a mere 23 years late....

http://www.gizmag.com/ryugyong-hotel-pyongyang/19389/

Personally I really like it, although rumours of an irrepairable structure, crumbling concrete and 'crooked' lift shafts leave me wondering how long it will stand for, plus NK isn't exactly experienced in such buildings...

Cool though....

General Banter / Excuse of the century!!!!!

The Police phoned me to keep me informed on the progress of the case against the guy that caused the accident in June. His excuse / defence was that he never saw the line of stationary traffic because......

wait for it...............

he saw a spider, and froze in terror, rendering him unable to brake!!!

General Banter / JD power 2010 results..
« on: July 26, 2011, 07:10:35 am »
some interesting results,(cars built 2008 - 2001) look at the overall manufacturers score - Vauxhall dead last, Alfa managed a creditable 10th tied with toyota and VW and a very good showing for land rover at 14th (they used to be near the bottom in the early days of the freeloader)

http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/jd-power-survey-2011/the-results/257096

the odd thing is, Ford, who finished quite near the bottom, had one car in one car that scored significantly better than all of the others, and one car (the Ka) that finished significantly worse.. No suprise that the Mondeo finished higher in the super competitive D segment - get that one wrong, and you really are in trouble.

does go to show how quality varies model to model.

General Banter / Sweepstake.... what is Ray looking at buying??
« on: July 24, 2011, 02:09:04 pm »
Well, its obviously a 12 cylinder judging from the how many cylinders thread... as far as I can recall, there are only three countries that have built V12's that are anything approaching readily available - Britain, Italy and Germany.

The Brits are limited to the Jaguar XJ-S, XJ12, series 3 E type, and a couple of Aston Martins, the Italians have a veritable gaggle of V12's - Ferrari 400i 550 456 575, 599 612, lambo Diablo, countash, Merciellago etc, and the Germans have a few Mercs and BMW's

If I know Ray, we can pretty safely knock the Italian cars off the list, and I'd shy away from the Brits.

I'm going to wager.......(in order of likeliness)

Merc SL600
Merc CL600 (or AMG variants of either)
BMW 850
BMW 760
E type series 3
Aston Martin

So...whadday think?

(I have to add i'd sell my granny for any of the above cars)

General Banter / How many?
« on: July 22, 2011, 04:42:25 pm »
Cylinders on your 'fleet'

I'm on 8;

Car  6
Bike 2

I'm sure people can beat that (motorama, you're excluded from this one, as you're a trader!)

so go on then, the only stipulation is they must be complete vehicles (not necessary to be legal, no garage floor engines to be counted) no lawn mowers, jet skis or LS1 powered blenders!

Food and Drink / old news, but fire hits historic brewery...
« on: July 14, 2011, 10:54:13 pm »
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12092805

part of the abbey where Rochefort beer is brewed was hit by fire just before christmas.

if you ever find Rochefort beer ( in any guise, 6 8 or 10) I urge you to try it, its quite remarkable... 6 is the pick of the bunch, but they are all simply amazing.

involved in an RTA on Tuesday morning, i was stopped in stationary traffic, the car behind me stoped, the car behind him belted into us all at quite some remarkable speed. net result?

two cars and a bike totally written off, a third vehicle (pick up truck) damaged, two ambulances, three police cars and a fire engine needed. the A428 was closed for an hour between 8 and 9 am causing traffic chaos through bedford.

The GPz is dead (bent frame, fuel tank ripped off and every panel smashed) and I'm beyond gutted, but i count my blessings that i've got nothing worse than whiplash and general aches and pains.

I was behind the pickup, the silver audi was behind me, and the silver Vauxhall was behind him, and was the one that caused the accident (everyone else was stationary)

The other thing that was interesting was the police and paramedics agreed that in this instance, me being on the bike actually saved the guys behind me from worse injury while making things no worse for myself either, the bike was catapulted out of the way, giving the audi more room to come to a stop.

General Banter / And Britains' worst car is.........
« on: May 31, 2011, 07:54:15 pm »
the Ford Ka (new model) with Vauxhall coming last overall in the manufacturers.

http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/31052011/36/ford-ka-hammered-jd-power-survey-0.html

Unsurprising top slots, German and Jap seem to be the cars to buy..

Quoting: JD Power

However, this disappointing result relates to the new Ka, launched in 2008. It's the first time the car has appeared in the survey, which was completed by 16,840 owners. The majority of complaints related to poor build quality.

But Ford was spared the overall worst manufacturer result, which went to Vauxhall. The company has never fared well in JD Power surveys, but this is the first time it has sunk to the bottom of the pile, with every one of its models scoring below the industry average. Poor dealer service was cited, too.

Classifieds & Useful eBay Links / Flex-o-lite trans cooler
« on: May 30, 2011, 10:11:24 am »
Brand new, unused aluminium and copper trans cooler. no fittings or rubber hose, the cooler itself is however boxed and unused. cost 40 pounds, i only used the fittings and hose to repair a damaged line on the camaro several years ago (this was all i could get at the time) the ends of the cooler are barbed to accept rubber hose and jubilee clips.

will post pics later, first 20 pounds gets it.

Due to the arrival of a new pimpwagon, my Brother has his old pimpwagon for sale. 97 R reg E300 turbodiesel, in generally good order, mechanically excellent, the body is reasonable for its year.

The front wings are a bit frilly as E class wings often are, and a dent behind the headlight on the front left wing.

Engine and gearbox are superb, and the car drives amazingly well. Will put up some pics when i get them.

its just an old big reliable diesel Mercedes estate, perfect for a workhorse. it even has a towbar, and loads of tax and test.. 180,000 ish miles if memory serves me correctly..

£1250
