why limit yourself, there are some excellent alternatives out there.
How about a volvo S40 (or C70 if you are ok with a petrol) or a Pug 406 HDi (excellent car for the money - ask don shiftini) you could also look into a Saab 9-3 or a honda accord

tbh I only had a 30min browse to see what out there. I've driven a Volvo V40 and Honda accord and they are both good cars, especially the Accord 2.2 CDti.. or whatever it's called.

Alfa is £396 comp with European breakdown cover, Ducati is £190 with no ncb (couldn't transfer it when I took the policy out, as the shunt was still being investigated)

Problem is I only have 2 years no claims (previous insurance companies didn't let me accrue it on a classic car) and I'd be doing ~28k mile a year.

Mustang is £360

hmmm.... if you can find an owners club, you can usually get your best deals there for insurance - my £25 per year fees for alfa owner easily outweigh the £200 insurance saving.

The other factor is the more mainstream the car, generally the more it costs to insure, example - maserati 3200GT's are quite cheap to insure, because they never got popular with chavballers in the way ferraris did, who then wrap them round the nearest lamp post.

I insured through flux and as I had so many other previous policies they let me have mine for £390-odd IIRC - which I thought was steep !

That was 4 years NC.

Good to know as I'm with them at the moment. It's the miles that seem to make the biggest difference.

Yeah, at least on the online comparison sites the difference between 10k and 28k was over £100 per year.

ONE YEAR AND 22,000 MILES ON . . . . . .

My Mondeo is still going - only one minor service in that time. Have replaced one headlight bulb and put on two tyres for the MoT - That's it !!!

Last tank's MPG averaged 55mpg (that included the snow)

The ONLY faults that have developed are:

A minor hot-start problem - takes a second or two on the starter (MPG not affected).
Bulb behind the dash for the trip meter has failed (but still easily visable even at night)

Beat that Alfa Boy

EDIT - Current mileage just under 193,000 miles.

5500ish miles in a little over 4 months, 1 service and set of wipers.
No issues...other than me busting up an alloy in January and the locking wheel nut key mysteriously vanishing from the ash tray last week

Getting about 55MPG as well

The return trip to work is around 60mpg.

Current mileage 101600 ish

I'm back looking at the market for a new economical ride (yeah, probably not the best place to ask on an American car forum!) sadly a new or old Mondeo is not on the list. I'm limiting myself to 1.6 and will probably settle for a Focus Estate.

Good to hear your rides are holding up well! How's Rob getting on?

Ive got a 2000 focus estate dude, its awesome! I got the 1.8 as i know the ins and outs of them, the 1.6's are yamaha developed zetecs, you dont actually save much fuel using them as they have to work a lot harder!

the 1.6 is cheaper to tax kf ou get a 2001+, hence i went for a late 2000 1.8. I'd have got the TDCI if i was travelling to work but mpg isnt really an issue as i do less than 5k/year

Interesting. I'm currently on the look out for a runaround for when Sammy goes back to work and was initially put off the Focus estates because of the 1.8L - which seemed to be standard on those.

She wants something small so I my even go for a Festa but that seems too small to me.

Focus's are better cars but there's more choice of Festa's, it seems.

i personally wouldnt fancy a fiesta, they're just a bit too small. THe focus is lovely (i had a mk1 focus when they first came out) so I may be a little biased. They ride very well, they're nippy enough on any motorway. I think the 1.8 has 115hp as standard, not as torquey obviously as the tdci but adequate for a daily runner.

Bits are cheap from eurocar parts, breakers yards are FULL of focuses so you're never left looking for a part. I pulled the front brake system off a focus st170 in a breakers yard and bolted it on to mine, the discs are massive and the calipers are huge. I'd do the upgrade on ANY focus i buy in the future, you simply CANNOT have too much braking power! especially around town when every f**kwit in front of you wants to park in a tiny space theyve seen at the last minute!
