Well done Art (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Not sure why it has high indicators, it should have low front indicators being a crossover?

New pop-top saves you a bit of money. Tax exempt too :)

Does it run? MOT?

the engine has a knackered bearing and joural ..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)
it did run but badly

its moted and free tax until end of august...
its a ''73'' built in 72.. i have a letter from vw confirming its build date as 21st sept 72...
its gotta front beam ..

just removed a lot of the grey primer to find some filler but its a skim over the added sill , then not painted so it started bubblin and rustin ,(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)

the side in the pic is the worst, will need a bit o platin underneath for its next mot,
but all in all not bad... for a 40 yr old bus.. gonna tidy it use it then start addin metal to it next year,
plan addin a towbar and takin the bike out around the country..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

No, but if you want something in and running I could ask the restoration dude who welded my bus? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Otherwise, you could try asking on the local Northampton VW forum which is Shoe County Dubbers: http://scdvw.proboards.com/index.cgi

Well worth having it tax exempt, helps keep the value a bit higher and saves you the bucks too.

Must have been one of the first of the new shape - high indicators, long rear lights, euro bumpers and smaller rear air-vents. Usually around that year, the VW factory was still using front panels left over from EarlyBays and combining them with the newer-styled long rear lights. So you would have low front indicators and long rear lights.

It's similar with my '68. It has rear light panels from a Splitty that the factory were using up, but the EarlyBay front. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mouth.gif)

Window rubbers all look in good condition, probably been replaced fairly recently (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/thumbsup.gif) Perhaps done at the same time as the pop-top, which isn't cheap! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/confused.gif)

To be honest, that's not a bad investment plan. Probably better than any ISA could get you right now (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Classic VW's are very desirable and do appreciate in value faster than most other cars.

Make sure you do a lot of research about the seller before you buy. There are a lot of VW engine builder cowboys out there. VZi is a good place to start: (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rtfm.gif)

http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=774717&highlight=ebay+engines

Could you not build the engine yourself or are you just looking for the fastest way of getting it back on the road? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/huh.gif)

The extra 41cc is not enough to overheat the engine providing ALL the tin-wear is present and correct along with the fan and dog-house shroud.

Type 4 engines do produce more power and are more economical than Type 1, however, parts are much more expensive and it is harder to modify Type 4 engines.

I would stick with the Type 1 engine as I know you are a man that likes to fettle (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mechanic2.gif)

spoke to steve from ss engines in romford ... he has a 3 week waitin list at the mo,
he has built over 120 1641s in the last 2 years and has never had one back with issues, he puts a more toquey cam in em for buses..

building the engine my self is outta the question,
by the time its been machined and the same new parts fitted that a recon would have it will cost more..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

its the way most engine builders work at the moment,
theres no chance i will get my unit back..

engines built to order, and at this time of year they are manic with hobby type car engines,
all of the people i contacted suggested a 3 week lead time..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Nice Art!

You not thinking of going twin carbs? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/stir.gif)

More power and surprisingly more MPG as you aren't working the single carb as much. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

aparrently a larger single progressive carb will do the trick...(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

and wont need constant balancing that twin carbs do(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Naw, you will have issues, especially in winter, with carb icing and general running issues etc with a single.

Twins will only need balancing once. Really you can do it yourself to get it nearly there, then take it to a rolling-road to get it perfect. Then you should be good for thousands of miles. More MPG and more power!

I like the colour choice for the doghouse, I was going to paint mine a light colour, white or possibly a brown (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

I assume it would make it a bit lighter in the reasonably dark and small engine bay under that hatch.

The test rig you have made up is brilliant, the light switch made me laugh! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/banjo.gif)

That is a good thing about AirCooled engines, you do not need much to get them started and can be run on a bench, so you can ensure they are running correctly before going through the hassle of reinstalling it.

fuel economy
more power
ease of maintenance

cheap supply of scooby engines for years to come (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

how expensive is it to get a vw engine rebuilt, and most of the parts are 30yrs old..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

heres some ideas,

secondhand scooby impreza/legacy

= 250-400 bucks

recover most of outlay, by breaking and sell unwanted parts,

gearbox, wheels, lights, bonnet, suspension, rear diff, seats, brakes, etc etc

keep nearly free ,engine and wiring loom,

sell turnkey rebuilt vw engine £1200

buy conversion parts ,gearbox adaptor,clutch,cables,exhaust,cooling bits,etc,etc  £1000

heres some that have been done ..

Totally agree dude, if you want to have any serious use from your bus then an engine swap is a good idea. That doesn't mean a T1/T2 aircooled engine can't be reliable, it can, but it takes more maintenance (regular oil changes every 3k etc). (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mechanic2.gif)

For myself, I like the sound and character of the aircooled engine and as I'm planning to use it purely as a toy, I'm not too bothered about economy. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/littleboy.gif)

I'm assuming you have already found your way to http://www.vwkd.co.uk/bb/?

Have you fitted the reconditioned engine you bought, or is it still on the test rig? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

i read of so many people who's two week trip abroad gets no further than the docks and then on to the back of a recovery truck,(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Yah, I'm planning on electronic ignition to try and cross at least one thing of the list of things to be concerned about.

How much did you get for the shell scrap?  :dontknow:

The only thing left on the shell was the glass, and 3 scabby wheels,
i sold the front slam panel ,£60
had the flat piece of the roof ,for welding repairs,
all the drive shafts, diff gearbox, int, engine, carpet, fuel tank, calipers, discs,
most sold
i need to add up what i have taken, around £650 ... :yes2:

tbh
i told them to take the shell for nowt,
their local to me and ive known them for years,
they came within an hour of calling

so i was lucky, with scrap prices at the moment ,
i would possibly have had to pay to have it taken away , :o
