As Chris seems incapable of asking - (http://www.aaci-beds.co.uk/forum/smileys/smirk.gif) - Can anyone spare a day or so (or even a morning) over the christmas period (Ideally 27 & 28 - But also 29 & 30 too) to assist with the Duster.
I Believe the plan as it stands is as follows -
Saturday the 24.
The Duster is moved to the Unit (at Leighton Buzzard) to dry out over christmas.
Prep the area. Get dust sheets up etc . . .
Tuesday the 27.
The Front end. The Wings need to be finished being hung - Volunteers !
Also the cowl (I'll do) and Final prep.
Wednesday the 28.
Front end must be finished and prepped.
Doors must be (Very) nearly done too.
Thursday the 29.
Doors finished and prepped.
Roof/Posts Finished and prepped.
Also as much of the rear quarters and boot lid as I can possibly do.
Friday the 30.
Spraying.
(Ideally) Monday 2 Jan.
Transfer to the Barn (Brackley)
There'll be other odds and sods which need doing that will help but obviously the priority is the bodywork.
-
Can't promise, but I'll see what I can do. You never know, I might be allowed out to play. (http://www.aaci-beds.co.uk/forum/smileys/up.gif)
-
I'll help out provided you don't mind giving me some tuition... I'm off that week
Only thing is i'm planning on changing my Headlights Setup that week so i'll need a couple of days to do that.
-
No Problem.
Although I'd love someone to do the bodywork - I've come this far so I may as well finish !!! (http://www.aaci-beds.co.uk/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)
Mainly It'll be helping Chris finish odds and sods . . . Maybe take off boot lid /bonnet. Hang/fit the wings. Little prep work maybe. Finish off suspension and brake bits. Bleed brakes.
Depending how far we get - Fit lights, bumpers . . . .
That sort of stuff.
The Unit has heating and Toilets, kitchen, internet etc . . . (It's my offices) For those who've never made the trip.
LU7 4GP.

No.
After the paint is finished it'll be hidden away for at least a month for the paint to harden fully.
Chemicals (eg Bird Sh!t) can ruin a painted finish before its final rub-down and cut.

-
out of interest how does satin black stand up to greasy mit prints? is it like normal paint or more like stainless steel where even the slightest touch shows up?
-
It's not great. But once it's had a 1000 Grit wet flat, followed by a 1200 wet flat, then a T-cut and polish, it should be fine.
-
thats good then, it'd be a pain having such high maintainance that ment you couldn't touch the thing, + Bling would be a nightmare!

oh, with regards to the amber section on the lenses, do you want that keeping or removing? i dunno what the situation is for bulbs on the duster, as to what sort it uses, and if you can get amber bulbs for it..
if you can get ambers, i can remove that slightly dodgey yellow tint, and have a nuch neater finish. i've only put two coats of laquer on, so can go back and remove it at this stage.

what you need to do is get a gredit card with the lowest ballance transfer rate for the life of ballance, normally 5% then use your first card to buy the motor then transfer the ballance. It will be cheaper than any bank loan rate (http://www.aaci-beds.co.uk/forum/smileys/devil.gif)

i'm still not convinced on leccy water pumps on a road car - they are extremely expensive, and to be perfectly honest, a normal pump works just fine anyway.. i also sont like the idea of loosing the alt meaning you boil the engine quicker..
i just cant see a couple of BHP being worth the expense, especialy as you wont feel a gain of anything less that 10 BHP, probably more like 15 is a heavier car like a yank..

Well i am running a electric water pump,
they work much more eficiently as they drive at a constant speed, manual pumps catheta at high rpms reducing the effectivness of the pump.
Also electric pumps can be wired to continue to circulate after the engine has stoped reducing heat soak which V8's have a problem with
-
modern ones dont..
any HEI chev with an ECU should retard the timing when it hot starts, preventing that lazy hot sttart problem.

You can get into the unit whenever . . . . I'll leave you the keys if need be.
There's no issue at all with you doing that.
(you'll need to move the van/chav'scort (depending on what's there)

Also, I've been reading up on the brakes/sway bar issue.
It seems that when some people but 73 brakes (which i'm pretty sure they are) on a 72, with the 72 sway bar, they often clash and the calipers have to be put on at the back of the disk....

I'll have a look see if i've got any photo's with the wheels off, pre re- bushing.

Ok spoke with andy tonight, he apologises for not getting back to you mate but as you might guess is a little busy.
360ci 350hp maybe a little more.compresion would be 10-1 maybe 10.5. He gave me a quick rundown on the parts and as i expected all are top notch, no cheap chinese crap as thats not his style. To machine the intake port and machine heads will be around $150 plus the manifold cost so budget $350
I asked him when he had a min to put this in an email along with the trans info

O.K, Back on topic . . . .
Following the "Ditch Incident" on Sunday I've been having a think.
Main Damage I see as is follows . . . .
i) Front Bumper.
After a "quick look" I think the dent in it looks pretty even . . . so, for now at least I'd go with the original plan of removing and painting the front and rear bumpers . . . Then off-set the number plate to one-side . . .
ii) Front end damage.
The Rad appears to have survived, but the box-section below hasn't . . . It's not visable, so I'd suggest cutting/replacing with a new section (home-made) - but this is subject to inspection.
iii) Inner wing Damage.
A previous repair has showed itself - so I'd recommend looking into replacement panel(s) for the N/Side and Possibly O/side too.
iv) Sump (?) Damage.
Although another engine is on it's way it is possible the impact could've damaged the sump and likewise damaged the oil pump . . . This really needs to be looked at before any serious miles are put in.
v) Sill Damage.
Replacement Sill, quite frankly - no options here.
You could source one from the states or get a quote based on drawings locally. (I'd guess the panel was very simple, TBH).
vi) Scuffs/ Scrapes.
After all other work is done I'd recommend a full "blow-over".
Not as involved as the last - just keying and enough paint to cover the whole car in one hit. (Probably 12 cans).
-
Found this ebay shop the does the sill/rocker panel
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&rd=1,1&item=4626061555&sspagename=STRK%3AME WA%3AIT
-
Had a quick look . . . Cant find replacement inner wings.
But, TBH, looking at them new ones would be easy to fab-up.
And recommended too, with the addition of the new lump.
-

you need to keep the same size pipe as the header exits with otherwise your wasting your time with headers. Most headers exit to a 3" pipe remember that you have 4 pipes 1.5" feeding into the collector reducing the exit size reduces the flow of the exhaust gas reducing power. its simple you cant put more in than you can get out but hey what do i know
-

so chris's motor
350-400 CID
250 to 550hp
3" to 4" single pipe
2-1/2" to 3" dual pipe

I disagree.
If you reduce the diameter of the pipe, you can speed up the extraction of the gases. The increased pressure will puch the gases through. Obviously there does come a point where the pressure is too much, and the gas is restricted from leaving the ports.
Inversely, if the pipe expands, the gas slows as it fills the extra space, reducing the 'pull' effect in the pipe.
Unfortunately, there isn't a fixed answer to exhausts, and getting the best solution may take lots of trial and error.

3" to 4" single pipe
2-1/2" to 3" dual pipe
Ah, I was assuming dual pipes. Is it a single at the moment?

all this happens in the first 3 feet mate hence the reason headers work better than a stock manifold
-

its a twin pipe but i would always go to the largest pipe why go to the smalest?
besides i said 3-3.5" before even looking so i was only .5" over on a twin system for that motor

Very little will be chrome eventually. most will be black/stainless to follow the look of the Valve covers and air fiter I posted on here a while ago.
Was just stateing the alternater is pretty shitty looking... but if it works ok it will stay.
-
Serously speaking how much difference will buying another intake and getting it ported with the engine make?
Cos I could save best part of £200 there?
I'm guessing its not something that can be done later. at least not cheaply.

Andy would weld and machine the intake to match the ports, chances are that the intake manifold would have smaller ports than the heads depending how much port work andy does on them so you restrict the intake flow to the heads.
Engines are all about getting as much in and as much out as posable on every stroke mate. Thats the key to performance

its a twin pipe but i would always go to the largest pipe why go to the smalest?
A certain amount of back-pressure is required for Headers (particularly) to work efficiently.
If the pipe is too big, the back pressure drops.
There's an intesting build-article I read a while back. It states that matched-length primaries are highly important, but often over-looked for more cosmetically pleasing systems.

I would always keep the same size pipe as the exit size on the header, if backpresure is needed to be uped you can get restricters that slot between the header and the pipe. These come in various sizes and mean you can tune the pipe

That wouyld make it worse as you would need double the amount of turns you ghad to use to correct it with the big wheel. What you need is a high ratio steering rack

The circumferance is the only thing to change - so how would that alter the number of turns ?

the reason they fitted large steering wheels is like a pulley system, the larger the wheel the less effort you would need to put into turning the wheel, with a small wheel you would have to turn it even faster
what chris needs is this

ATM in normal situations the steering is very light now, i think one of the wheels was stuck in thr door track valley, thing.

I was quoted $40 to ship a Camaro T-top via USPS.... I know they're not going to be light, or small, but if you don't need it priority then it doesn't need to be shipped priority!(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)

thats gonna be a huge box and its the size of the box that does it. You could have a 6x6x6 box weighing 56kg and box the same size weighing 2kg and it wouldnt be that much difference in cost. They cube the box dimensions and calculate from that.

thats handy, the front motor plate would probably be a good edition but its $279. Looking at the front end on that car i can see a lot of flex if he launches hard so anything he can get to try and transfer the stresses to the whole car is gonna help in the long term
-
I've suggested to him he gets a new core support (as his is bent) or that at least he adds some box section in it's place to stiffen the front . . .

well i found a place in canada that has the inner fenders, those along with the struts should help, but its going to need subframe connectors as well. Thats a big motor going in there and the car is gonna need all the helkp it can get from bracing

Your probably going to need to take that to some one who has a JIG to make sure its square.
In reality i think your gonna be looking at about £500 minimum to have that welded in place. JUST MAKE SURE YOU TAKE IT TO SOME ONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING OTHERWISE ALL OF YOUR FRONT END ALIGNMENT WILL BE OUT.

Will know more details in the next week but it would mean the motor being dyno'd at westech which hotrod would pay for and also the chance that the spec would be upped courtesy of hotrod and various sponsors :cough: edelbrock heads :cough: Andy has told them its a customers motor and anything they bolt on for the dyno runs will stay bolted on when the motor leaves.

indeed i was shocked when he said so as well, i know he takes an absolute age but he does do things right in the end.
The basics of the story are that Hotrod is looking to do a mopar build starting with a stock block dyno then add more bolt on parts dynoing each time much the same as the junkyard jewel pontiac 400 that shifty and I bought parts from.
Dave frieburger is a mate of andy and asked him about your motor that he had seen sat on a stand the last couple of times he had been to the shop its either yours or they go find another block and start from scratch.
Andy syas he should know more in the next week as it would have to be ready for next month so im guessing the dec or jan issue of hotrod. If you can make it you might even get your mug in the mag (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/lol.gif)

Yup hence me posting it here, i spoke to him last night chassing the poncho stuff and giving him a hard time over dragging his ass on your build. Hell even if it gets your motor finished and dyno'd its got to be good
He cant promise the heads but usually most of the companies give the stuff to the magazine in return for the feature So who knows what bolt on parts could be on it

Well I don't have any tools except my socket set. I know there is a least one sheared bolt holding one of the shackles up so will need something to remove that. I can't remember if the new shackles came with new bolts and they are at the barn so can't check (picture on YearOne shows bolts though).
I'll bring the diff oil with me.
Everything else should already be at the barn.
umm (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Pretty sure the shackles came with bolts . . . . you may want to pick up some spare sockets / drivers for the "other side" or spanners at least ????
I'd suggest checking that the diff cover is tightened to the right torque (so torque wrench) ???
EDIT - do you have a new gasket ?
If a bolt is sheared you'll need heat and/or drill to remove it. What size was it ?
I'd recommend taking grease (not oil) to coat the new bolts with to prevent rusting/siezing in the future.
A wire bush would also come in handy . . . as would something to put on the floor as I don't fancy getting dirty this weekend . . .
You'll almost definately need spanners for the U-Bolts as I'm guessing a socket will bottom - out.

No point getting a complete set like them anyway as I already have a socket set so a set of spanners and a few of screwdrivers should keep me going for a bit.

I'm sad to say the Duster is being sold.
Open to MKBer's first ofc.
Looking for about £400.
I'll try and do a full write up by the weekend and take some pictures but basically she's a rolling chassis. There is no Engine, Transmission or Exhaust!
Main points:
Needs some welding done primarily the front inner fenders and could probably do with some floor pans.
Front outer fenders are Fiberglass; there is some slight damage to them. Rear fenders are pretty rotten.
The whole car would need some body and paint work.
The interior has been stripped, though most, if not all of it, is stuffed back in the car.
The rear axle is 8 1/4" and has an LSD fitted with 3.91 ring gear by Hauser Racing.
Front and rear shocks have been replaced. The rear springs have lowering block 3” if I remember correctly.
Font end is all polly bushed.
I have a new set of front calipers and pads but never fitted them.
The door handles have been removed and door poppers fitted,
Petrol filler has been moved to inside the boot.
That’s all I can think of at the moment, bear in mind she hasn’t moved anywhere for 2 years so I recommend viewing if anyone is interested.

Engines been Advertised on Ebay for nearly a Month now for $3400 with very little interest.
And according to the Builder nothing is selling in the States. Had a look at complete listings and couldn't find much except this Ebay Link Which went for a little over $1k
Been offered $2300 for it...
I paid about $4500 for it.
Not sure what to do...

at the end of the day the guy has had YOUR money in his bank for a couple of years,(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rock.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/smirk.gif)
YOU.. should not be waiting on the result of an auction to get back your money......
a stronger letter should be sent to him.....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rtfm.gif)
on the other hand...with the exchange rate varying ...$1000 was probably £500 two years ago.....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

If you've been offered $2300 then wait till the classified ad expired and get him to start an auction with $2300 as a starting price... The worst that happens is the guy who was interested buys it at that price, the best is that a few people bid it up to something more like what it's worth...
