Plan is to start with the engine bay, POR15 weld / wiring etc etc, then build up a good engine then rebuild the front beam (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif) - can anyone tell me about POR15, is it the best antirust stuff to use? Wheres good to buy from etc etc?
Basically I want something that I can brush on over not-too dodgy areas and it sort the rust out and prevent anymore happening. I also want to use it as a hammerite coat when parts have been welded up to coat them and protect them. Is POR15 what I should be using?

Yes, I wanted it atleast on the road for this summer even though it wouldnt have alot of the modifications complete on it (disk brakes!!), but mostly due to money restrictions, it wont be done..
Plan is now to get it back from shot blasting, take to welding / paint, then have a nice solid shell and the colour I want to work on slowly putting it all back together - and anyone whos done this kind of thing before knows that putting back together takes 3 times as long as pulling apart.
Perhaps doing it slowly will ensure that its all done right (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/mechanic2.gif)
The only annoying thing is that now I have found the local shot-blasting farmer, it would have been great to leave the prep-work and painting of the floor pannels until after, then I wouldnt of had to prep, just paint.. Annoying.. But then I guess the shot-blasting would not of got everything totally off so I would have still had to do some grinding and wirewheeling (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

The engine I have now will reach 4k, the stroker I want to build should get to about 6.5k - not that I would ever drive it like that all the time, just wouldn't want to be red-lining it all the time.
The main reason for getting the monster apart from looking cool and the shift light, is the size - I found with smaller top-mounted tachos, they are hard to really see the differences between numbers and in an engine that runs a slow RPM, every hundered is important to monitor. I found this especially true in my 1.9 diesel wedge - again limit was 4.5k :geek:

I can't remember either (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)
Yes, for now it will stay matt-beige, but I plan to play with the colour when it is on the road.
Choices are, a darker matt brown / beige:

Looks good, wouldn't you get that half inch once you load the suspension? I take it's bare of interior? Or just start eating some pies?
Yah, it should go down a tiny amount once glass is in etc, but obviously with the engine in the back, there isn't a lot else to add to the front (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)
Just worked out smaller tyres will drop from 122mm to 80mm - so there is an inch already.
I might add adjusters to the beam at some point to reduce the wheel to wheel arch height - but that's when it is back on the road..

How much strain does that put on the running gear / suspension / brakes etc?
No idea. I presume as other people have rolled their bus with a full camping interior, glass, engine and gear-box with no issues, mine should be wayyyy lighter than theirs. The one thing I would maby think about stessing too much would be steering arms - which weren't connected when I rolled, but will be to roll back, then roll again, roll back then roll again (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

It's unusual to see Body work done first and then the chassis
Yah, that was my fault really. I had it shot-blasted then had a 'quick' look at the chassis and I evaluated all the areas that needed to be done and at that time the shell was like a collender and the rear roof was non-exsistant, so I wanted to get it up to a base standard before continuning - so that's where Andyvan in Wales came in - he bought the shell, roof, doors, window edges and sections of the chassis up to a reasonable standard.
Fast-forward, I rolled it, then got going with the wire-wheel and sections that I thought were OK were in-fact OK but the bus has gone from 'just get it on the road' to a nut and bolt restoration (minus the shiny shiny paint and good engine for now), so I knew painting over the dodgy welds would have been alright for a few MOTs, but you would have ended up patching again - which is the issue with the bus, it has just been patched - so now Jason is just taking all that off and putting it back to how it should be.(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/crazy.gif)
Update from Jason:
Quoting: "Jason"
I can foresee a problem in that the inner sill thats up in the air at the moment has been welded on too far away from the chassis, hence all them extra bits that have been welded to it at the end of the top hats etc. (if you look at pic 1777, where the top hat ends is where the inner sill should be) This appears to have been done to bridge the gap that would have been there. I will look into this further and see what our options are and get back to you.

10k rpm gauge, ambitious.
What, with my flat-4 aircooled? Naw (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)
I think it would be doing well to get anywhere near 4k, but I bought the gauge to be future-proof and as it has a programmable shift-light.
So with the current engine, I would set the light up at 3200 or something, to stop the MOT guys over-revving it. However, when I can build a better stroker engine, it should be able to get 6/6.5k - so again, I wouldn't want to have to buy another gauge.

Try Summit and ship via iParcel - they add the duty on top of the shipping charges (and they're always the cheapest) and because you pay the duty in advance the stuff flies through U.K Customs !
Quoting: F Body
Sweet but surely it only needs to go to 50mph
Aha, funny you should say that but, one of my 'requirements' was to find a gauge with a 'sensible' MPH range on there. Most were going to 180mph, which, yes, is pretty unrealistic in a '68 bus (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/crazy.gif)
The style of the gauge I think looks pretty impressive, it has a classic look with the typeface chosen on the cream background which also manages to look similar to the original German typeface that was used on the original gauges from the 1960s, the chrome ring gives it a nice boarder and the black ring in the centre gives it a bit of contrast. It's also digital, so useful for trip-counting too! As a bonus it goes to 120mph, which leaves 60mph nicely at the top of the gauge, which I think will be used the most (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/drive.gif)
