My friend just got his first tat, doing the honorable friend I managed to hold back the grin til he'd left the room. It was his own design but its just a big black fish shape. Must be about 4" by 6" on his arm but it's all filled with black ink.

Fair play to him on getting it but he has already said he regrets that there is nothing else to it other than black. He's adamant it's the first of many though.

I don't regret any of mine.

Your friend clearly didn't put enough thought into it if he's regretting it already.

It's that kind of mentality that helps gives tattoos a bad name.

I'd always recommend putting at least a year of thought into your first tattoo and if it's your own design - and you think you're happy with it - put it to one side for a couple of months then look at it again.
Most artists (myself included) are highly critical of their own work so something that may look brilliant now may not look so hot in a month or so when your brain has had a chance to digest it . . . .

It's always better to take your time and then change the design on paper as once it's on skin it's a tad too late.

I have no sypathy for people who rush into getting a tattoo then regret it.

I do, however, have sypathy for those stuck with a crap tattooist . . . . My first three I was always happy with until I got together with my current tattooist . . . then his work made my old tat's look cheap  . . . . Needless to say I'm already having one reworked and the other two will follow to bring them all up to standard.

I have a suspicion it was a spur of the moment thing. But oh well i guess, his skin not mine.

The best tat I've ever seen belongs to my mate, cost him something like £30, done before a gig in London, was very much a spur of the moment thing.. I'll add he's a sound tech with me at the pub and we'reboth kinda notorious for having builders cracks while loading up. Anyway...

I must admit i was very impressed by the place Deano goes to - it does however highlight just how bad those trailer places you see at car shows are - there is no way you could fit everything into a trailer he has there, yet there is nothing there that isn't necessary for a decent job.

people seem to suddenly decide they want a tattoo, then decide what they want when they are waiting for it, utter madness - you wouldn't choose a car on that basis, so something thats going to be with you for the rest of your life deserves a little more care and respect.

getting it wrong with lots of spur of the moment cheap tattoos can leave someone looking like they spent the night parked in a bad neighborhood, and woke up covered in graffiti.

a properly drawn well thought out tattoo can look good, sadly that seems to be less of the norm.

I'd love two sleeves but Its hard getting it out of my mind and on paper, I might start with a little something for my Dad.

I personally dislike sleeves . . . . they always end up just making your arms look dirty rather than tattooed.

That said both of my arms are now about 85% covered - but they're all separate tattoos and occupy their own space with a even distance apart.

Also full sleeves are very painful (inner, upper arm) so go for something a little less ambitious, first.
