Title: Forum Layout??
Post by: Jamieg285 on October 18, 2005, 07:27:30 pm
Now we are up and running, and we seem to be going well, Can I have some suggestions for the forum layout.

I added a few basic ones just to get us started, but I think that it can be better. There is the option to add a sub-titles to separate into sections if required. See Naughty Section

Go for it....

would be nice if peoples projects were stickied at the top of sections if this is possible.
Also can individuals have control of there project thread  ie remove old/unwanted posts or would this require a subsection on projects with each project as a new section and the owner of the project a mod on that section only

I Think as long as we're sensible this shouldn't be needed . . . ?

Took me a while to digest this one :

- Do we need to sticky the projects? They have their own sub-forum, and I can't see it being so busy that any will drop of the page.
- Moderators is a global option (at the moment - may be hackable in the future). For now I have assigned me and the reps as mods, but also suggested that others are too - will await a response.
- Failing that, I am sure that the mods can repsond favourable to polite requests/bribery

Are you talking about the recent posts list? I don't think you can stick them in there.

Was messing around yesterday with netscape as it has a editor feature and changed the colours of everything. Is there anyway we can have say 4 colour ways and them be user selectable from say the bottom of the page?

You may have seen that it is possible implement alternative 'skins' with ease. It doesn't have the option to allow the user to switch, but I am sure I can work out how to add it.  At the moment though, there are a ton of other things that I want to do first - a few more downloadable add-ons - remove stats from non-logged on users - password protect individual forums - unread post indicators

Maybe I haven't worded my request right, as no-one has responded with the sort of reply I was expecting.

I am looking for suggestions for the sub-forum names and order.
We currently have :

News
Banter
Suggestions
Projects
Questions
Naughty Zone

Do any of these need dropping - any adding - any Title(like the  Warning! bar)

How about a subsection under projects for ebay listings, seeing as we all use this as a valuable source of parts.

it doesn't fit very well into a line of text tho (http://www.aaci-beds.co.uk/forum/smileys/sad.gif)  the smaller ones are less imposing on the post content

We need someone to take on a project of compling our smilies.

To start with gather all the ones we want to use (I don't think there needs to be a limit) and give them all an appropriate name, starting and ending in :

I will let you know what format I need the list in so that it can be cut and pasted into the forum for immediate use.

I guess we would also want a 'priority list' for ones that appear above the post window, with the rest being available from the expansion window.

Not sure what you mean by multiple lists, it'll just be one long list.

We can put so many directly on the posting page(determined by size really too many and it will get cramped), and the window will show all of them.

That would be a nice idea, maybe a prefernce option you can set in you're profiles or something

Actually, I suppose that it would be possible to amend the code to have 2+ rows of smileys (maybe too extreme), but I could have options to open different windows for different classes/sizes of smiley?

I think that could indeed be possible, you could even have both windows open at once....

We could add more as well - themed windows? i.e. motoring, xmas etc.

I will have to leave the compilation of smilies to someone else though, I just don't have the time.

Possibly but its a lot of work because they would need to be pulled apart, changed frame by frame, any shadows re-instating (which would not be as good as the originals) and then putting back together again.
