Title: Wannabe G33K question . . . . . .
Post by: Roadkill on December 19, 2010, 10:19:46 am
I've just completed Half Life 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it.

My question is, as I'm not a natural Gamer/Geek, what other games are like this ?

That said after completing HL2 I had no Idea what I'd done, what the story was about or what I was doing while playing it !

It was good though.   It's a cheap way of killing my time over winter so I want more !!!

Log onto steam and download Counter-Strike Source (CS:S) - it is a free add-on for the HL2 game and is a great multiplayer FPS. It's the game that started it all!

It might be worth going back to the original half-life.

The single player storyline and gameplay are excellent in all the half life games. Can't think of anything else anywhere near as good of the top of my head.

Bad Company 2 (BFBC2) had a decent single player mode, but seemed very short.

Half Life

FYI. From this came Counter Strike and DOD as 'mods' to the game which was basically modifying the skins, models, guns etc to make a whole new game. This was started by a couple of 17 year olds who produced possibly the greatest multiplayer FPS - it defined a lot of online game play which we see today across all platforms - from PC to PS3.

Half Life 2

This bought Counter Strike Source (CSS) and DOD:S along with Portal, Team Fortress etc.

All downloadable through steam (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

(CS:S will be a free download as you have HL2 - unless it is a 'shared' version).

Slightly longer version:

This is assuming you mean single player games. There are *lots* more options for multiplayer.

There are four main Half Life (HL) games.
HL
HL2
HL2: episode 1
HL2: episode 2

Read the box of the game you just played.
Find out what you have of the four above (eg the 'orange box' contains all three HL2 games).
Obtain the games you don't already have.

Its not entirely HL2 like because its a RPG(Role playing game)-FPS(First person shooter) crossover, but you could try Fallout 3.

Its a similarly apocalyptic setting (this time being Nuclear war rather than industrial accident/science & aliens) but is set in a VERY USA 1950's type setting/mentality which may well appeal to you, imagine that the 1950s mentality & ideology never ended until a nuclear war 90 years later (2041 to be exact)

Points to note:

- It is NOT a linear storyline like HL2, your actions have consequences that affect what you can do / who you can speak too or deal with etc.
- It takes a fair bit of time to level up & play (which over winter is ok)
- The story is very good (bear in mind there's been 2 previous games but knowledge of these is not 100% necessary to get engrossed in this games setting & story)
- The majority is "run & gun" but it depends how you play the game, with it being 50% RPG there are way to talk your way out of most situations without resorting to blowing everyone's heads off. each way has its benefits & drawbacks. It can be a 'thinking mans game' for these reasons.
- It will happily run on your new PC
- The "Broken Steel" add-on pack is recommended to complete the 'full' story of this episode of the series. (the other add-on packs are glorified side-quests and not 100% necessary)

This game was my first foray into the RPG genre and I like it, mainly due to its heavy FPS influences. So much so I bought the sequal, Fallout: New Vegas, which i'm still playing my way through.

Further to my quest for wannabe G33kdom I've now downloaded :

Half life 2 Episode 1, Half life 2 Episode 2 and Half life 2, Lost Coast.

I completed Lost Coast yesterday, Episode 1 earlier today and I suspect I'll finish Episode 2 on Monday.

:G33K:

I've now downloaded GTA4 with the add-ons but am still after more games.

I'm considering Half-Life 1 (just to complete the set as it were) and someone at Sammy's work has recommended a couple : "Saint's Road 2" & "Stalker" - anyone know anything about those ???

After I've finished the Half Life's I suspect I'll go for FO3 - I'll be saving GTA4 for now. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Half Life,
Half Life Opposing Force,
Half Life Blue Shift,
Team Fortress Classic . . . . . .

All for £2.24 . . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

I haven't got a clue what the last three are about . . . I went on to buy HL1 and noticed they had the above 4 games for only an extra 75p !

Being a Zombie fan this interested me . . . I went to go on Steam earlier but it's blocked here at work. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

Yep! I had to rush loads of uni work because I was too busy playing ZP.

It's good fun, not sure what the servers would be like now - if people still play or not (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/huh.gif)

You would have a few guns to find with loads of people online and one person gets chosen as the 'zombie'. They have unlimited spawns and have to recruit other player zombies by biting them.

Lots of funny stuff going on like blocking up doors with barrels and a couple of you holding up in a small room with a few rounds in a shotty or something, then it is down to crowbars and whatever else you can find (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

Well ZP has come from CS:S which came from CS which came from HL. When I say come from, I don't mean just the premise, the actual game engine and open-source status that allowed people to customise the game made it all possible, with it bringing a new level of online multiplayer gaming.

Have fun. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

If / when I get to play games, it is usually online.

I currently like GT5 on the PS3 and a bit of ol' Skool Counter-Strike:Source on the Mac.

Both I start playing for a bit, but if there are ridicuously good people playing, I start to mess about. GT5 is funny as you can park your car with the hand-brake horizontally against the pit wall or something which turns any serious race into destruction derby! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rofls.gif)

I can't remember how you add friends on steam - think my name is monkeyonabike or monkey0nbike or cunning plan - I can't remember, but if you add me, at some point we may be able to join the same server and shoot some terrorists. Failing that, it is always fun to run around chucking grenades at stuff (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/hunter.gif)

On a sidenote I've now completed Half Life: Opposing Force.

It was a good game - alot easier than the original HL and I found the baddie at the end a piece of p!ss to kill.

Bit disappointed in the end.

Am now on Half Life: Blue Shift . . . . . The plan is to complete ASAP as the basic graphics are really starting to irritate me.

I've got the STALKER games still - plus I'll look to download CSS over the weekend.

(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif) Graphics on CSS are super good. And there is a real physics engine, so you drop a grenade and it rolls down a hill - same as HL2 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

I bought this on my steam account a while back, I think I still have it, although it isn't supported on the Mac. But, I didn't get into it as it is more of a RPG FPS. It defiantly gave an impression of 'nuclear wastelands' though. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/snipersmilie.gif)

People online usually use it to block door entrances with barrells etc, as you shoot the barrels and they fall over in the door way, put a few together and people can't get in without shooting them again - which reveals where they are on the map.

On CSS, CS_Office is a good map. The terrorists have hostages in an office building, if you choose to be CT (Counter-Terrorists) you have to storm the building and rescue the hostages by leading them back to the rescue point. However, you need to protect the hostages as they can get shot too, so you need to work as a team with someone infront and behind the hostage rescuer to clear the corridors.

If you are on the terrorists team, you have to obviously have to stop the CTs getting in. In the boardroom the second set of hostages are kept, as a T you can throw a grenade behind the filing cabenets in the store room which explodes throwing the cabenets blocking the door entrance. You can then wait and unload into the door way to stop the CTs.

Fun Fun.

Have now completed Blue Shift . . . . in about 6 hours . . . a bit disappointed as it was easier than Opposing Force.

The ending was pretty damn simple, too. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

I think it's just the STALKER games left, now.  And GTA4, too, obviously. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Will have a look on steam now to see how much CS:S is at the mo. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

EDIT - CS:S is £13.99 a the mo - that'll have to wait until after payday. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/down.gif)

Just been playing STALKER for just under three hours . . . . . I still have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing or what it's all about.

I haven't given up on it but it's definately hard-going . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Not sure I'll be going the distance.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Wow.

Just finished the STALKER (Chernobyl) game and I must say I'm disappointed.

I know there's loads of alternative endings but the game is so disjointed I just can't bring myself to go through all that AGAIN (and again).

I've already downloaded the second game (at the same time) so will give that a go but I'm not gonna hold my breath . . no point wasting time on a far-from-perfect game when I'm already into GTA4 (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)
