worth noting, as this will directly affect older V8's.

a bit of googling revealed that diesel oil or classic car oil may be an alternative, as it has more ZDDP in it than petrol engine oil.

good info here, relating directly to Yank V8's

you've got a roller tappet motor in the IROC, so no issues with ZDDP

The 4.0L Jeep engine is flat tappet so mine needs it, but I have no idea if the oil I use, and the oil used by previous owners, contained the right amount.  The level has been dropping for years so it may be pointless to worry about it now...

I'll check, and if I have to pay more for something with the right level in it then I will, but only to an extent as a new cam and set of lifters is not expensive (around $200 for a cam and 12 lifters) so it's not worth spending way more then it would cost to replace (assuming a DIY job).

Wise words.  Even better now I've got instructions for a very cheap retrofit conversion to put later roller cams/lifters into my early SBC
