Title: Home-Pub Mini-Project . . . .
Post by: Roadkill on October 28, 2013, 03:55:14 pm
Another hair-brained idea to keep me busy for a little while . . .

Further to -

Quoting: Roadkill (on "The Beer Thread")
I can fit 3 kegs, side-by-side, in the shed on a shelf, so will run a pipe from each tap (I'm fitting ball-valves) to a back-plate that will mount a tap for each keg . . . .

. . . Also, each keg will have a pressure take-off that be connected to its own gauge which i'll mount above its corresponding tap.

That way I can keep tabs on each keg without going outside and know when I'm close to zero pressure (and air getting in) in each barrel . . hopefully minimising the risk of it going off.

I've now officially started this mini-project.

I figure having beer at home is awesome and making beer is awesome . . . so storing it and serving it correctly is a must to make the whole experience truly  . . . . awesome !

As mentioned above, I can fit 3 kegs, side by side, in the shed so that's how many taps I intend to go for.

I want the install to but clean, cool looking and take up minimal room in the garage.

I've gained 4-foot of wall, above my bench in the garage due to the creation of the shed and removal of the window.

I say I've gained 4-foot of wall but I still need to mount my monitor . . . I'm gonna make up a plate to wall-mount it (it currently sits on a stand) . . . this'll give me some room to the left and hopefully some room below the monitor . . .

Yesterday the canvas for this was created . . . .

The frame work . . .

The plasterboard fitted, ready for filling . . .

I've been busy buying bits for this, too but it'll become clearer, later . . .

hmmm nice kegs ..

i have two of the top tap king kegs..(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif)

they are great as you can get your hands inside them with the 4'' lids...

dont over tighten the lids,(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

k/k also had some that were not well made and would split under pressure..[but i think that batch has gone and the problem is sorted]

it looks like you have some good ideas there ....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

where are you taking off the pressure gauges from..?

have you not thought of the pub type daylex taps ....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

with regards to the co2 ...you can get various dispensers that take larger capsules

heres one found on a quick ebay search (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

dont over tighten the lids,

I've seen spanners for them . . think I'll invest in one of those as I'm not good at not over-tightening. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Quoting: art b
where are you taking off the pressure gauges from..?

I was going to mount them on the body itself, but then figured it'd be more sensible mounting them on the ample lid . . . that way if I f*ck-up the install it's a cheap replacement.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Quoting: art b

Yes.  But they're more expensive and need (from what I can tell) special plumbing fittings . . . I figure this set-up is cheap 'n' cheerful for now . . . I'll upgrade at a later date if required . . .

Quoting: art b

I've seen them but I don't think it'd help . . . ???

Unless you're half-a-keg down even an 8g bulb fully pressurises the barrel . . . anymore would just be vented out and wasted.

I figure, with 3 kegs on the go they've got a bit of time to self-presurise between uses . . . hopefully saving on the bulbs.

In fact, on my first keg I used 8-9 bulbs . . . On my current 2-keg set-up I've only used 6 and have about half a keg left.   Pro-rata it seems that by doubling the kegs, you almost half the bulbs needed due to self-pressure.

Hand-sanded the wall infill last night and sanded the repairs to the adjacent wall . . . got 2 diluted coats of PVA on it, too.

Need to paint the side of the existing window frame tonight and then hope I've got enough of the coloured paint left over to paint the wall !

Also took delivery of my monitor mounting plate to mount it to the wall.  It needs a quick buzz-over with a linishing pad and then a couple of coats of black hammerite.

ART -

Further to you mentioning the bicycle tyre inflator that you posted . . . . I'm assuming that all valve caps (for bikes and cars) are the same ??

If so, fitting one of these :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PACK-OF-FOUR-BOLT-IN-NICKEL-PLATED-TYRE-VALVES-FIT-11-5mm-HOLE-/251270824226?pt=UK_Cars_parts_Vehicles_Wheels_tyres_trims_Valve_Caps_ET&hash=item3a80e88122

would then accept that inflator wouldn't it ???

Then you could use 16g CO2 bulbs and control the input . . . ?

as far as i know ,yes to all of the above ....(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

A bit of progress here . . .

I manged to eek-out the bit of spare paint I had left over to get three coats on the in-filled section of wall . . . Then fitted the stud which'll take my monitor . . .

Then turned attention towards mounting the monitor.

I designed this simple plate and had it made (time saving) . . .

Chucked on some wrinkle paint (any excuse). (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Note that the area to the right was purposely left "thin". (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Mounted on the back of the monitor (I left the back paint-free so it wouldn't stick to the wall). (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

How it looks from the front (not that you'll see any of it any way . . . ) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

The monitor is now fitted to the wall and the height works really well . . . perfect if you're standing but also ideal if you sitting, too.

After that I made a start on the actual Home-Pub part of the project . . . after some serious head scratching and measuring (I was left with the space that I expected - but hoped for a bit more . . . ) I drilled three holes through the wall and into the shed.

They were very close together and on fitting the first tap mounting flange it quickly became apparent that the plasterboard would disintegrate with so many fixing so close together . . . .

So I stopped and drew up a mounting plate to take both the taps and the pressure gauges . . . I'm hoping to have that made this week at some point . . .

Hmm, this has been kinda on hold while the shed catches up . . . .

However I have been testing my pressure gauge theory and, after a few teething problems with a split fitting, I have success in principle.

I've just used a short piece of rubber hose for now, but this is the only difference . . . so I'm convinced the set-up I plan should work . . .

I just need my tap plate.  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

O.K . . . Continued tidying the modifications where the old window was (i.e. fitting conduit for the monitor cables and fitting architrave to match the adjacent area).

Just need to add a top-coat on the architrave and then a bead of silicone to finish that off - but more on that later.

Progress on the actual taps / plumbing / drinking part of this project has been next-to-nil recently so I decided to work on this today . . .

First was to fit the tails to the pressure gauges (1 is currently in use as a test - so these are the remaining 2).

I tried using PTFE tape initially but this was too much . . and me being me tightened the fitting too much and split one of the tails . . . thankfully I had a spare and switched to thread-lock to lock and seal the threads.

Next the "tap plate" . . . mounting all this individually to the wall proved too much and left my new wall in a state when I test-fitted the first tap.  The plate was laser-cut, leaving me to chamfer the holes and edges, add corners to three of the larger holes (these will take the gauges) then mark, drill and tap the holes for the tap-bases . . .

Looks a little messy but it'll get some wrinkle paint so will be fine . . .

Next mount the taps to their bases and trim the pipes as required . . .

Next mount the taps and degrease . . .

I was going to leave the brass on show . . . but decided black, white, brass and chrome was too many colours in one small area . . . so the brass will be black, leaving the chrome taps and white gauge faces to stand out . . .

Am currently painting . . .

I cut and ran the vacuum lines last night, as well as drilled the necessary extra holes . . .

Here's a picture of the tap plate all painted and test-fitted (I needed to do a little filing of the timbers in the wall so it sat level).

The plan tonight is to mount all the pressure gauges to the plate, then connect the vacuum lines at the shed end and mount the plate . . .

In order to connect them at the keg end it means releasing the pressure in all 3 kegs which seems like a waste of CO2 so I'm going to wait until the pressure drops naturally in each one before installing the tail and connecting each one.

Just means I've gotta up my drinking !!  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cheers.gif)

Real progress, now !! (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

Drank enough of the IPA to get the pressure down to 1psi so I could remove the "test" pressure gauge . . .

I mounted the three gauges on to the tap plate . . . it was a pretty tight fit as I'd filed the round holes square just enough for them to fit . . . That said to be on the safe side, I also used Araldite around the fitting on the back "just in case".

Once dry, I taped over the areas to help prevent the Araldite sticking to the wall (to aid any future maintenance).

The three vacuum lines were attached to the back of their respective gauges and the plate screwed to the wall.

Back out in the shed I tidied up the vacuum lines and supported them under the Keg-shelf.  The three lower holes are 15mm and lead to the taps . . . I'll get some pipe collars for the vacuum lines so they look a bit neater.

And overall . . . so far only one keg is connected to its gauge . . . as the pressure drops in the other two I'll connect them, too (shouldn't take long).

Next stage is to finish painting and silicone-sealing the architrave in the garage-end . . . . I should get this done over the weekend . . .

After that I need to connect the lines for the beer itself but I'm waiting on some inline valves to arrive, first.

It took 10 pints over three nights . . . It never reached high pressures as it was my "test rig" for my first pressure gauge and leaked.

It was only after I fixed the leak that it started building pressure . . . even then it only got to 7psi.

Unfortunately, with Wifey and Sprog, I rarely get more than an hour out there at a time and "holding it" for that long ain't a problem for me.

Bugger.

I went out there last night to start getting the fittings together to plumb the beer lines in and found that I haven't got any plumbers solder . . . I tried to use electrical solder but I wasn't happy with the results.

A reel of solder is mega-expensive, so I've just ordered a 1m length off eBay.

Should have it by Friday.

Soldered up the fittings . . . .

Added the in-line valves and fitted them to the back of the tap-stubs.

Then ran the beer lines . . .

Next step is to sterilise the lines before flowing the beer (and checking for leaks) . . .

Note - The muppet eBay seller sent me one of the wrong size clamp so I need to get a correct one before connecting the last line . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

Sterilised the lines and got two beers "plumbed" . . . unfortunately one of the only fittings I didn't make (the tap back-plates) is seeping on one of the two.

I've drained that line and will have to take the whole plate off to re-solder the connection . . . lots of hassle !

On the plus side I get to see how the rig will work . . .

Here's the video of me pouring my IPA . . . if you look really close you'll see the pressure gauge flicker as it drops just a touch near the end.

pity about the leak,(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/can.gif)

I'll be dusting this project off soon as all three barrels are nearly empty, meaning I can disconnect all the lines and sort the leak before the next three barrels are mature and ready to go.

Plus it's a free-fix (or should be)  . . . and I need some of those at the moment !

Yaayyy !

This project *should* now be all done.

First job, once all the barrels were empty and clean was to fit the remaining 2 pressure take-offs for the pressure lines (only one was connected before as a test).

Next I got to fixing the leak I had . . . .  I disconnected the pressure gauge lines and removed the plate from the wall . . . . .

I didn't want to remove the individual tap and base from the plate as it'd wreck the crackle paint finish and cause more work . . . . Unfortunately, repairing the leak meant using a blow torch which could also damage the paint . . and the gauges . . . and the pressure lines . . .

So, I turned the plate taps down, soaked a tea-towel in water and wrapped it around the tap in question, then shielded the pressure lines with tin foil.

The theory was the heat would be kept to a small area and the wet towel would stop the heat spreading through the plate and damaging everything else.

The plan worked and I cleaned up the solder fitting on the tap-base  . . . . .

To be sure (or as sure as I could be) that I'd fixed the leak, I part-filled my spare keg with water, connected the tap to a line on the tap on the plate, then emptied a CO2 bulb into the barrel to create some pressure.

An hour later and no sign of any seepage so fingers crossed . . .

I then had to touch-up some crackle paint in a tiny area on the side of the plate but it was an easy and invisible fix . . .

Re-fitted the plate to the wall and stopped for the night.

This morning I filled the 3 barrels with the next batches of the good stuff, loaded them onto the shelf and connected all three pressure lines and all three beer lines.

I'll leave the pressure to build naturally while we're on holiday then "live" test everything when we get back . . .

I think I can call this project officially finished.

All three vacuum lines appear to be holding pressure just fine, as is all three beer lines.  No signs of leaks and I pulled the first tasters from the 3 kegs over the weekend . . .

(video)

They need another week or two to clear fully but all three are nice. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cheers.gif)

There was one tweek I had to do . . . after noticing an air bubble in two of the lines I used some aluminium pipe and longer screws to space the brackets that held the pipe to create a gradual up-hill run, instead of a level-ish run . . thus eliminating air pockets.

Mission successful !

Think I'll have a beer . . . . (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
