Projects / Chemical Metal
« on: May 24, 2015, 09:59:04 am »
Does anyone know much about Chemical Metal? ???

I have read good things about it. People claim to have made temporary repairs of parts which are subject to high stress, however, the repair is so good, they have left it as a permanent repair.

There are small holes or gaps which annoy me from previous repairs, but I do not think it is worth grinding the area apart to get a decent weld or material in there. Two examples attached, one Pea-sized on the roof corner and another on the Outrigger / Jacking-point where it meets the chassis.

Would Chemical Metal be a good solution to use here, or should I just paste it over with Seam-Sealant, which, seems to be what most people do.  :rasp:

These might be of interest to someone on here.

One has a crack in it in one of the holed segments as showed above. However, the rest of the 'structure' is okay and you cannot tell once it is on the wheel.

They had covered around 40k miles and as a result, they are not perfect, but they should tidy up your car at least!

£12 + £3.50 Shipping to a UK address or FREE collection from Northampton or Wisbech areas. I go to MK around once a month for work, so I could also arrange to meet locally.

« on: March 24, 2015, 07:02:08 pm »
I do not think there is, but just incase, is anyone a designer on here or know someone who is?

I would be interested in any type of design to buy, for any topic / subject matter.

Ideally I would like to browse through a portfolio of designs and buy the rights and construction files to any that are of interest.

PM me.  :secure:

Known problems / Show New Replies to Your Posts
« on: March 19, 2015, 09:11:22 am »
Currently we have:

Show unread posts since last visit. (Shows all new posts since your last visit).
Show new replies to your posts. (Shows new posts since your last visit but just the threads you are participating in).

However, a couple of times now I have wanted to link to an old post of mine and to do that I have had to find the thread which is quite difficult.

The only way I have found of doing it is to click on your name to get to your profile and then 'Show Posts', but that displays them as actual posts instead of threads.

Is it possible to change the 'Show New Replies to Your Posts' link to just show all of your posts? That way, you can view all of your threads you are participating in and any which have new replies will be at the top with a notification.  :pass:

General Banter / Which Wheel Cleaner - FBody?
« on: March 13, 2015, 02:13:06 pm »
Does anyone have a suggestion, especially FBody, of which wheel cleaning product to use to remove stuck-on brake residue but also one which is gentle on the alloy and brake calliper?

 ???

Known problems / Thanks / Like Functions etc?
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:51:27 pm »
Great work on the forum Ian, it is significantly better than the last one.  :claps:

I know you already have a lot of configuration work to finish off, but I am just wondering if this forum allows for add-on functions such as 'Liking' a post or 'thanking' people for points etc? :dontknow:

The images are all missing. Is there a script you can run to update all of the images to the new forum formatting or something?   :error:

I was playing with a new Mini (not mine), F55 1.5d to be exact and there is no oil dip-stick, instead you have to use the on-board computer to run an oil check, which then displays the results on the centre console screen, similar to this one, but imagine an image of a dipstick with a level indicated on it:

That bit is quite simple, you would think a sensor just detects how much oil there is and displays it on the screen, however, to measure the oil, you have to have the car running and in neutral, which then prompts the system to start checking the oil.

On older engines, I have always waited for the car to cool and the oil to return to the sump to get an accurate measurement of exactly how much oil is in the sump and therefore, available to the engine. My understanding is, if the engine is running or has just been run, the oil will be distributed around the engine, in the journals, head, passageways, turbo etc, so the amount in the actual sump will appear to be lower.

So, how do new engines, without dip-sticks measure oil?

Questions and Queries / Replacing Brake Line and Bleeding System
« on: December 04, 2014, 10:05:23 am »
Our BMW E39 failed its MOT on a few items, one of which was the front-to-rear brake line/pipe.

If I disconnect the affected pipe to install a new one, will I need to bleed the whole system again?

My understanding is that the 4 brake pipes, which go to each individual wheel are separate at the master cylinder, so letting air in one, should not affect the rest?

I am just working out how much time I need to allocate to it..

Questions and Queries / Breakdown Cover Options?
« on: September 30, 2014, 07:11:57 pm »
I'm currently with the AA and it is due for renewal. They are using their usual tactic of sending through a renewal letter with a value that is higher than what new customers can get the same cover for, with the hope that I do not read it and allow the cover to simply continue.

So, before the usual call to the AA to complain and renegotiate, I am wondering what other options there are.

Preferably, I would like cover for myself to use on any car to be recovered to any place of my choice.

I have looked at The AA, RAC and Green Flag and they are all around the £100-120 mark.

Green Flag have an option for non-customers to use when they need it or ad-hoc which is £108 for roadside assistance and if it cannot be repaired, they will tow your car within 10 miles to a place of your choice.

Nice to have the option, if you do not need to use them, it's £108 saved, if you do, then you pay there and then. However, you would be in a very negative position if you need to use them more than once or you are more than 10 miles away from where you need to get to.

Are there any other options out there?

General Banter / Why is it quiet here again?
« on: July 11, 2014, 10:17:27 am »
I think the main reason is, where is RK?

I'm at work, but like to reward myself by having a quick browse on forums when I have done a bit of work, but MKB has seemed very quiet for a few weeks now.

General Banter / Finally, I have bought a Camaro!!!!!
« on: July 06, 2014, 11:39:11 am »
Bought from quite a young lad with his blonde girlfriend, but he assured me that he had owned the car for quite a while.

Anyway, here it is! Sorry about the picture of me posing on it, but I was just so excited, I stripped off and got my gun.
