it has now... the oil pressure dropped while the guy was checking it over, likely due to swarf from the crank trashing the big end and main bearings..
the lower pulley had been incorrectly fitted in the past and had worked loose, so the crank was flexing, which in turn bent then snapped. while it was with ashley and paragon it was in the bent and cracked stage, its finaly snapped. the bent crank would explian the odd vibration at 1200rpm that was getting worse every time the car was fired up.

its not unknown on the ford V6
also turns out the alfa engine was likely due to someone buzzing the engine in the past, likely by engaging 1st instead of 3rd. the head gasket never goes apparently, but if over reved, the pistons can crack around the gudgeon pin, eventualy failing, and the rod punches through the bore. its not common, but it happens, while revy, the twin spark doesn't like over reving.
basicly everything thats gone wrong with the alfa is due to neglect rather than the car, my mistake was buying one without a service history.
i do have the stereo code now though

as i said on the lexus topic:
Quoting: ian
I think mate, in all honesty, get a new engine in the alfa, new engine in the stang sell them both, pocket some cash and then PX the lexus against something else - the alfa you want (the V6) or something totally ddifferent.
IMO you'd be daft keeping either the stang or the alfa...both have had their problems, both have had more than 1 chance.....i'd rather spend money on something i want (i.e. the V6 alfa you want) rather than spend MORE money on either of these then it eitehr goes wrong agian or you end up trading up to the v6 in the future - fix em, sell em, px the lexus job sorted.

Dude that is brutal
so was the death rattle and vibration on the hard shoulder when it was running with 3 pistons....
the anoying thing is its very likely it was due to someone hitting the wrong gear in the past and over revving the enigne. when you do that to an alfa engine (or a ferrari engine for that matter) you can start a crack on the piston, that slowly grows.. sooner or later it comes apart completely.
