from my stash ive used
 
4ky of marris otter
1/2 of caramalt
and 1 kg of crystal malt ...to give it a nice brown colour...




here are the grains mashing[infusing like a teabag]
 at 67 deg for 90 mins...they smell grrrrreeat

That's hardcore brewing.  Not sure If I wanna go that far, yet.  

I'm guessing you need slightly more serious equipment for "doing it from scratch" ??
