Question. (Non-auto) Elecrical earthing . . . . .
« on: December 06, 2007, 08:23:04 am »
I'm in the process of moving a radiator in the bathroom at Castle Roadkill.

I notice that there's an Earth wire coming from the wall to the back of the rad.

It is NOT connected currently, nor is there any sign it has been . . . . .

I'm guessing it's supposed to be connected but :

a) Does it have to be connected to the rad or can I connect it to one of the pipes inside the wall as I'm replasterboarding ?

b) What kinda connector/strap do I need to connect it - can I get it from Wickes/B&Q ?

I don't want this to slow me down further so I really need to get it sorted tonight.

Ta.

Thats earth bonding and yes it should have been connected to the rad/pipework.

To answer your question yes it does need to be re connected, yes you can connect it to the pipe work although with that small pipe you have in your place i dont think they make the connecting clamps.

I can get a bonding strap today if you want and give it to you on the weekend as they are usualy sold at electrical wholesalers, wickes might have them as B&Q but im not sure on the price.

it loops around the pipe, just dont tighten the screw down to much as you can pearce the pipe, we used to do this to the plumbers all the time when i was at college so that when they filled the systems they had a flood

So.

If you could pick me one up today that'd be handy . . or at least find out if they are or aren't available for 10mm microbore pipe.

Does a radiator generate a current then or is it just a safety safe thing?

Doesn't the movement of water create a static charge ?
