Questions and Queries / Alternator woes
« on: February 02, 2006, 05:29:22 pm »
What's your opinions on doing the run down to the dyno day (and back) with no alternator?

I'm OK doing my daily commute(with a couple of hours on charge every 1-2 nights), but I ain't sure about a 100+ mile juant.

I figure I can take the charger with me, and top it up when we get there, but I am not sure if I would get there?

Work colleagues just brought in some donuts to share.

Looked quite nice, choc glaze with choc sprinkles, or white glaze with coloured.

Urgh, not a patch on KK's.   Need to make a stop off on the way home.

Yay,  I just got confirmation that I've got tickets to Super Bash 3, the NFL's official UK Super Bowl party in London.

3rd year in a row now, and it's looking better every year.

Any recommendations or suggestions?

I figure I want a like for like(ish) 3 wire GM/Delco, but might as well go for an output upgrade.

Are they all pretty much the same or are there some that are better than others?

I don't know when to stop

Tried to tune up the carb...

Altered the idle mixture screws, for what looks like an improvement. Removed the sight plug for the primaries, and fuel pisses out - no problem I think, just need to adjust the float levels.  Undo the float adjuster, and it doesn't seem to adjust - and fuel pisses out of there too.  Left it as low as I could and tightened it back up as tight as possible, but it's still weeping fuel.

Anyone got a spare Holley or any spares I could borrow?

Had a(nother) go at repacing the timing cover oil seal yesterday.  Aim was to fit the sleeve kit.

Got the balancer off, new seal in, went to fit the sleeve, only to find that it already has one, and the new one doesn't fit over the top.

I figure that the seal may be slightly oversized to fit the sleeve, and that maybe why the stock one didn't work either, so I just refitted the balancer.

Took her out this morning, warming her up gently, before a blat down the dual carriageway.

Oil everywhere again, possibly worse than before

No, it's not the new nickname for Ryan's car...

Is anyone planning on getting anything to go on this in the near future?

Dean - Caddy suspension? I know this was on the list, when do you reckon?

Need to know if I am shipping in my brakes separate or if it can go in the crate. (Can't wait too long for them as I want them on for the MOT.

RYWB starts up again this Sunday.

Not suggesting that we go that early, but maybe we should think about a visit in the first half of the year.

Who's up for it?  Maybe try to hook up with some of the other areas that are thinkging of going?

Projects / Bottom End??

Bum
Say's it all really.

Took my spark plugs out on Sat, good thing I did, they were thick in carbon - explains the poor running in the cold lately.

Cleaned 'em up, opened the gaps, shoved 'em back in.  Scared the neighbours by getting 4 plug leads on back to front (Gives some excellent back fires!)

Stuck on my new Accel air filter and took her for a (energetic) test run to Hitchin and back.

Good news - running smoother than ever, even in the cold/damp of this morning.

BAD NEWS The timing cover oil seal is still leaking, even worse when I push the engine up over 3K.   It can't be the seal, as it's only a couple of months since I changed it, so I can only conclude the crank is worn where the seal sits.

Projects / More Brakes
« on: January 09, 2006, 10:05:49 pm »
Having picked myself off the floor - £200 to properly sort the rear brakes, I have re-considered the option - Disc brake upgrade.

This is on the to-do list, but as rear brakes aren't as effective as the fronts, I figured that it could be well down the list - at least 4-5 years down the line. For the same reason, I am not convinced that I need to spend gross amounts of money on the Baer Kit.

I have found 2 kits (Wilwood and un-named) at almost half the cost - approx $600 + shipping. (not sure if the Wilwood will fit 15in wheels yet, waiting for a reply)

In your opinions, am I better off spending the £200 on drums and getting a few years use out of them before upgrading (regardless of make), or would the money be best spent towards doing the upgrade, but on the cheaper versions?

Projects / Brakes Overhaul
« on: January 06, 2006, 10:21:03 pm »
With my MOT coming around quicker than I'd like, coupled with the fact that Nathan didn't bother sorting them last year, I need to sort out my back brakes.

I want to do a basic overhaul.

I obviously need to get some new brake shoes, and I figured some new wheel cylinders, but is there anything else I should buy before attacking them.

Secondly, when I had rear brake failure earlier in the year (fluid leak), I couldn't get either of the drums off.
Any volunteers to help me sort them out this time?

Suggestions / Meets and Food
« on: January 04, 2006, 09:47:24 pm »
Can we let people know in advance if people are expecting to eat.  This month was the 3rd one that we have been caught out.

We've had meets where we've turned up to find that the majority are eating, and some where were expecting the same, but ended up being the only ones and miss out on half the meet while eating.

Normally, it wouldn't matter, but with Alex we need to know what we are doing in advance and plan accordingly.

General Banter / Opinions wanted - wheels
« on: December 30, 2005, 04:43:53 am »
As posted on AACI - all opinions welcome....

Top of my shopping list is a set of big disc brakes. Before I can fit these, I need to increase my wheel size from 15 to 17.

I had always intended to get some decent 17inch alloy wheels, but they are much further down the shopping list, being bling rather than functional upgrades.

Being as the size increase is required for the brakes, I was going to spend this years budget on a nice set of alloys ($1000 for the set). Not exactly what I would want, but well worth the money, and I wouldn't be unhappy with them.

However, today I got thinking, perhaps I should look for the cheapest (steel) wheels I could that would do the job. This set would be only $250 - leaving plenty of budget to go towards the brakes.

I figure that these wheels could be used in the future in the winter, keeping the alloys away from the salt and in tip-top condition. The only downside is that they won't look as good as the new alloys, or IMHO as the ones I currently have.  I also have the voice in the back of my head saying 'go bling'.

What do you think I should go for?

Having had yet another re-think on what my next biggish spend is going to be, I am currently looking at wheels.

Any recommendations for places to look for some decent 17inch alloys?

Just taken a look here and seen a few I like. It has also shown me that the plan I had for a forward scoop, just doesn't look right, so a cowl it is.

The 3" Dominator (ooh err), Daytona and L-88's are my favourites.

They also do 3rd Gen stuff

Maybe sometime in the future we could club together and get 2-3(more?) sent over together?

Want to be known as someone different?

I've discovered that's it's easy to change the users title (where it's currently Member/Moderator).

Only thing is I have to update them manually, but it ain't too much of a hassle to do.

So get in the queue and post/email me your custom monikers.

General Banter / I need a push
« on: November 10, 2005, 10:29:14 pm »
A man and his wife are awakened at 3 o'clock in the morning by a loud pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, is asking for a push.
"Not a chance," says the husband, "it is three o'clock in the morning!"
He slams the door and returns to bed. "Who was that?" asked his wife.
"Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers.
"Did you help him?" she asks.
"No, I did not, it is three in the morning and it is pouring out!"
"Well, you have a short memory,"says his wife. "Can't you remember about three months ago when we broke down and those two guys helped us?" "I think you should help him, and should be ashamed of yourself!"
The man does as he is told, gets dressed, and goes out into the pounding rain. He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there
"Yes,"comes back the answer.
"Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband.
"Yes, please!" comes the reply from the dark.
"Where are you?" asks the husband.
"Over here on the swing!" replies the drunk.

Suggestions / Shipping Stuff
« on: November 08, 2005, 04:26:25 pm »
I have just done a deal on a few (heavyish) bits in the states, and am looking at getting them back here.

USPS is available (private sale), but is $122 for the 4-6 week sea freight.

I contacted Moving parts, who cannot beat that, but says that there would be benefits if we added more items.

This is where you come in.  Headliners, caddy suspension, Diffs?  Unless you have a better offer, is it worth us pooling together and getting the stuff in one? He is willing to hold on to stuff in the states for a few months while the orders are processed, so there's no immediate rush, although I would like my bits by the end of Jan at the latest.

What'dya think??
