General Banter / Engine swap date change?
« on: November 19, 2009, 09:09:38 am »
There's a possibility that I may have to work on the planned 12-13th Dec weekend.

If it does get cancelled, is anyone available on any of the weekends between now and then to assist? Or dates further into Dec-Jan?

General Banter / Clever, but also annoying
« on: November 09, 2009, 01:44:22 pm »
I've just done a search in ebay for 'Small Block Chevy', to find that it has also included results from 'SBC'.

Clever, but it's turned up loads of stuff that isn't in any way related to what I'm looking for, and I can't see how to stop it.

Classifieds & Useful eBay Links / Fuel Filters
« on: November 08, 2009, 03:46:15 pm »
Found a couple of fuel filters during the garage clear out.  Not worth much, so not putting them on ebay.

Free to anyone who wants them:

1.  Chrome/Glass. Used, but not for very long.  Looks nice and clean.
2.  ProGuage GF61A, brand new in box, plastic. Includes short rubber connectors and clips.

Pictures available on request. If no takers, these will be binned.

General Banter / Would you sell it or keep it?
« on: November 03, 2009, 04:22:55 pm »
I'm having (yet another) clear up in the garage, throwing out the junk and finding things worth selling.

I'm in a quandry over the latest 'find'.

It's a front fender extension. It's in good used condition.  I don't need it right now, but if I did you can't get them new (yet) and in the time that I've had my car I've only ever seen 3 on ebay (and I've got all of them - The other two are a matching pair of NOS)

Being as I have this other pair, I'm thinking that I should sell it on, but there's a nagging doubt that it's a fairly rare piece and I should keep hold of it 'just in case'.

Help me make my mind up - what would you do?

General Banter / Call to arms - Engine removal, fix and replace
« on: November 02, 2009, 12:20:40 pm »
You may have seen in one of my other posts that I've got a cracked flexplate, and I need to get this fixed ASAP.

Due to the bitch of a job that it proved to be last time, I've decided that it's a much more sensible option to pull the engine to replace it, and sort a few other jobs at the same time.

I hoping to find some volunteers to assist me with the trickier bits, were 2-3 pairs of hands are required.

I've located the part and hope to have it in 5-10 days.  I'll be doing this on a weekend, starting on Friday and (hopefully) completed by Sunday.

Thanks to the volunteers so far, the weekend will be the

11-13 Dec

All help is appreciated, if only for a few hours or 2-3 days.  Food and drink will be provided, and some floor space if anyone wants to stay over Fri/Sat evenings.

More details on the plans available if required.

I've not get very far this morning, but the findings so far don't look good.

I pulled the flexplate cover off and was pleased that there wasn't any shrapnel or bolts falling out.

A firm tug on the plate/converter doesn't seem to highlight any loose bolts.

Spin the engine over - there's about 1/2 inch runout in the flexplate.

I've not looked any further yet (will do this afternoon).  My thoughts are a warped plate (unlikely, but fingers crossed), problem with the balancer (even more unlikely?) or bent crank! This last one could also explain the increased oil leakage lately.

Not a happy bunny

Projects / End of Stage 1
« on: October 30, 2009, 04:36:52 pm »
I should have done some more 'in progress' stuff on this, but I'm always terrible at it.

Anyway, thanks to Martyn with the fitting assistance last night (and the well trained Zoe), stage 1 is now complete.
Stages 2,3 & 4 will come sometime...

There were MANY hours of work in stripping and painting, and all I'll say is, I don't think I'll ever try painting stripes again - vinyl all the way!

And finally the all important drivers view.

General Banter / Engine Vibration
« on: October 21, 2009, 08:30:06 am »
My car has developed quite a bad vibration in the last 2 days.

I've ruled out the drive train, as it happens when at a standstill in neutral.

You can just about feel it at idle (1200), and it increases in intensity around 1700 and peaks around 2000, at which point it's so bad the dash is vibrating. After that it drops off a bit around 2400, and feels like there may be another smaller peak around 3-3200.

There's no unusual noises and nothing visibly wrong that I can see.

Any suggestions on what this might be, what to check and how to check it? I need to get this sorted before it gets worse.

General Banter / Anyone know of anyone who can take US deliveries?
« on: October 19, 2009, 07:34:57 am »
I need something to be delivered to a US address, but haven't had any response from Carl. (don't know if his email has changed)

Anyone know of any alternative 'friends'?

General Banter / Dagnabbit - got to change my air filter
« on: October 12, 2009, 07:31:36 am »
Looks like I will have to change my air filter, as the current 14inch one is just slightly too big for the current project.

I'm now torn between a smaller 10 inch one or oval, and I can't make my mind up.

Questions and Queries / Getting brake discs turned?
« on: October 09, 2009, 11:10:52 am »
The suggestions from the states forums are to take them to my local Autozone, but I think that's a bit too far!!

Anyone know of somewhere local that can turn brake rotors - and cheaply?

General Banter / Once again - getting the correct tools saves the day
« on: October 02, 2009, 01:35:54 pm »
I spent over an hour on Wedsnesday trying to fit the new springs into the rear drums when changing pads.  Tried all combinations of pliers and screwdrivers, but all to no avail

£8.50 later, I've not got the spring remover/installer tool, and was able to fit all four springs within 2 minutes.

As with a growing number of tools, it will now sit in the garage for years before being needed again, but for the ease of use, it's well worth the money.

Tip of the day: Always try to get the correct tools for the job - it makes things so much simpler.

General Banter / Assistance Required - Bonnet swap
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:59:40 pm »
Hi all.  I need a 2nd pair of hands to help me swap a bonnet over.  Tis a 5 minute job (maybe a little more if the alignment gets tricky), and I need to drill 2-3 holes in the firewall whilst it's off.

Can easily be done in an evening, or weekend, I'm flexible to suit whoever can help.

Questions and Queries / Paint finishing question
« on: September 22, 2009, 05:20:10 pm »
I've painted my scoop and added a clear top coat.

I've wet sanded with 1200, then 1500, leaving a smooth but non-shiney finish.

What's the next step?  Rubbing compound? T-cut?  Or something else?

Any advice welcome.

General Banter / Assistance required - sub frame collection
« on: September 20, 2009, 07:37:09 pm »
I'm likely to be bidding on a replacement sub-frame, and if I win I'm looking for some assistance picking it up (from Wiltshire - between Swindon and Andover)

Final plan will be for it to go into my garage, but I've got to finish the bonnet project that I'm part way through before there's room.  Hopefully it can go to the barn, or somewhere else that it can stay for 2-3 months at the most.

Anyone able to help on any of this?

Questions and Queries / Masking tape for curved stripes?
« on: August 13, 2009, 03:21:07 pm »
Anyone know what sort of tape to use to mask out some nice clean, curved lines?

I've tried using the flexible stuff from Halfords, and although it did the curves well, the edges were rough. As a consequence, I've had to sand it off and re-do it.  I don't want to have to do it three times!!!

I'm sure there is some form of fleixible plastic stuff that signwriters use, but I've not been able to find any.

« on: June 02, 2009, 03:20:42 pm »

Tickets are for both days.

General Banter / A very sucessful weekend
« on: May 05, 2009, 12:59:44 pm »
With the family away for the bank holiday weekend, I was able to dedicate over 30 hours to the car. I decided to attack the interior, specifically any jobs that required the dash being removed.

The jobs completed were:

    * Front Speakers fitted
    * 4th Gen mirror(with map lights) and wiring fitted
    * 4 way accessory power socket installed
    * Performance Box fitted
    * Radio/Phone Mic fitted
    * Power cable to phone charger concealed
    * Radio USB lead fitted
    * Electric Window wires concealed
    * Passenger side electric window installed
    * Rear speaker wires upgraded
    * Fitted electric fan override switch
    * Fitted electric choke override switch

Totally knackered at the end of it, but very pleased with the results.
