Title: 1968 firebird take 2
Post by: Gator on August 25, 2009, 05:18:15 pm
rightho back on the 1st gen (dont ask long story) so i am gonna start this from scratch, the car is totaly stripped out to the last nut and bolt so will start at the beginning of the rebuild and add bits as we go

when i bought this car 4 years ago it only needed a few patch panels LOL (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

one frame steering and suspension removed hours of wire brushing and jetwashing deagreasing ect

8 tins of hammerite later

Hammerite for the win, I painted our garden swing in green hammerite over 30 years ago and it's still good (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

I'm just trying to remember how many cars you have (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

The white Vette you sold.
You still have the Bullnose ?
and this 1st gen !
Anything else ?

this 1st gen and the bullnose (which may get the push) mate (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/cool.gif) i swapped to doing the bull for a while coz i had a deal set up for the body to get painted but that all went south

so back to plan A

soon as i get this front clip back in the whole thing is off to Rockys place (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

At least it looks pretty dam solid to start with..

So you rate Hammerite against POR15? (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif) (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Was thinking of POR15 then POR hardnose painting my chassis..

Title: 1968 firebird take 2
Post by: Gator on August 25, 2009, 08:55:53 pm
it had por15 on part of it but i took it off

por15 is fantastic stuff and as tough as it gets but its a pain to work with and will discolour if you dont overpaint it (more work) hammerite just sprays on and gives a great long lasting finish job done

and you can get it anywhere in a hurry unlike por15 which you have to get from frosts

and will discolour

Depends what POR15 you use . . . some are designed to be overpainted, some as a top coat.

I've never had any issues myself and mine's been on the car over two years so far . . .

the basic rust preventitive paint will discolour but it takes a long exposure to uv to do so

the stuff i have on the on the car ie in the garage are fine but bits and bobs ive had under the shed window inner fenders ect have greyed a lot

The rust preventative coat (typically applied to bare metal) is designed as a base coat . . . the Chassis coat (typically an over-coat) is designed as a top-coat and is U.V resistant.

My Camaro is done in Chassis coat, black, as there was no bare metal and no rust to speak of. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

whats the crack getting these barstewards in ? is there a tool or something ? im guessing some bits of tube the right size in a vice might squish em in

But why not just get stuff powder coated????

Looks great iether way..

Post by: Gator on August 29, 2009, 11:27:50 pm
powder coating means i have to take it somewhere and get it done i kind of like doing it myself plus its all gonna get well scratched and chipped fitting new bushes ect with paint i can just touch it up as and when

and this is cheaper (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

A ball-joint press.

Any garage will have a press to do it and should only charge beer money if it's already off the car and there for them.

You could show it to a vise but you risk damage. (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

I'd describe it as double wishbone, independent front suspension.

The shock feeds up through the lower wish bone, inside the spring bolting to the subframe.

Very similar to the suspension on my 2nd gen.

There's two main issues for me:

My current subframe is welded to SFCs, which in turn are welded to the body. It's not a straight forward job.

The second is that mines a daily driver, so I can't have it off the road for two long.

A separate sub frame is an interesting idea. I'll discuss it with her indoors - for £1 you can't go wrong.

Noooooo......................!

IMHO it will just be another black American car, I really don't think that black will show off the lines and details very well (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

I think you need a dark metallic colour, but I'd go dark green, dark purple or even a dark brown (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/wink.gif)

the silver roof/hood was a rattle can job by a previous owner it looks cool but close up you can see there isnt a natural paint where the silver ends and the green starts so it just doesnt work, from the angle in the pic its ok but it really isnt

i toyed with a black vinyl roof but i know when i see Rockys paint work i wouldnt want to slap cloth all over it (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

How do's Gator,

  How's the car coming along?

Been out in the garage and shed this week starting work on my old girl agian(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif) and fell over a dirt great big box. Thought WTF looked in it and found a set of front disc, spindles etc.  Do you fancy them for your Bird(http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

They need cleaning and the like. Have a look at them here.

From the Urban Dictionary :

Roadhouse

A badass one word response that can be applied in a variety of situations.. for example: hello, goodbye, yes, no, f*ck yea, its a good possibility, i agree with what your saying, lets do it, that's a nice flower blazer your wearing, what are you doing tonight, that could potentially be gay but im gonna go along with it, i don't feel like paying 5 extra dollars so were getting keystone, ect.

guy 1- "Dude, you fell down the stairs and p!ssed on the rug last night"

guy 2- "...Roadhouse"

I'd imagine Harleys are great if you like getting kicked in the balls repeatedly.

Thump-thump-thump . . . Rattle-rattle-rattle . . . They do sound good, though.

You have to ride one to appreciate it, People who have a pop at them have normally never ridden one.
I do like the speed of a jap bike but they don't have any style
A Harley can do a good enough speed whilst towing something (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)

So many people seem to ride Jap sports bikes these days but they all look and sound the same to me.  Very forgettable and you look daft wearing the romper suit riding one, in fact it's all a bit dubious and you look far from cool on one and even less so when you get off it and walk into the pub...

Harleys sound awesome and are seriously cool.  Jeans, boots, leather jacket and you look cool on one and when you get off it.

Rocky:  I have a poster sized print of that orange chopper of yours btw, I'll try and remember to drop it off to you at some point...  (http://www.mkb.cc/forum/smileys/up.gif)
