Question about lug nuts.
« on: May 17, 2007, 12:00:08 pm »
Currently I have A.R.E Torq Thrust II's on the Camaro but long-term will be going for something a little more beefy for the rears.

The TTII's use Acorn style lug nuts - ie :

The wheels Ideally want use these :

Do the later require special studs (ie extra-long studs) ?

Also I assume that they locate inside the holes in the wheels (for additional strength ?) and clamp via the flat, lower part of the shoulder instead of the standard acorn type which both clamp and locate via the recess around the hole.

Info appreciated.

I can't see the pics, but I think I know what you are describing.

The nuts don't, but the wheels might.  It all comes down to how thick the 'meat' of the wheel is.  I can't be certain, but you would want the studs to be about the same length as that thickness.

I'm sure the wheel supplier would be able to give accurate requirements.

I had studs like those on the Weld Racing 10inch rears I sold to Edge.

Seemed fine to me with the stock studs...

They were on the IROC, no spacers required.

They were 10inch wide with I *think* a 5.5" (might have been 5.25 but I think it was 5.5) back spacing
Check on thirdgen.org to be sure...

Excellent !

That's great news.

I assume the IROC axles were the same width as the RS/Z28's . . ?

I would say yes. GM doesn't like to change parts unless they absolutely have to.

I have like 3 packs of the second type of lug here, new in packaging. They are the type used with Slots.

HRC - I've been over to Thirdgen .org - couldn't find the info re. the 10" wheels over there . . .

Any idea where I could find it ?

just as an asside, with the exception of a very few specials such as slot mags, all lugnuts regardless of type should only contact the wheel on the taper.  The taper ensures that the wheel is aligned properly, and doesn't sit on the stud at all, it also prevents the nut from coming loose..

these are for slot mags only - note there is no taper at all..

FWIW, slot mags are beeeeyatches for wobbling, and running out of true.

You need a 5.5inch backspacing on a 15x10 rim on the rear.

That's what I had with 275 something or other tyres (same rolling height as stock).

Cool, ta.

According to BF Goodrich's info their 295's suit up to a 10" rim . . . . . .

275 BFGs is proper wide on a 3rd gen...

I have a pic of them on my car somehwere, they only just fit under the lip, 295s would stick out.

Without modification, yes . . . .

EDIT  -  That said, nothing is set in stone, yet . . . I'm still waiting til it's all back together before measuring and making final decisions.
